Best way of transferring progs from a nearly dead laptop
Discussion
MY 4yr old laptop is becoming terminal and keeps shutting down on me. Havent got a clue why, so i decided to get a new one.
Got home to find that i have a big problem as the new one has not got CD drive!!!! which leaves a lot of the programmes i have a bit redundant
Before the old one shuffles off this mortal coil,
can i transfer the contents of the C drive to the new one,
or would i need an extl cd drive with USB connector to replicste to old system?
Could i copy the programme CDs to a memory stick for future use,or is there an inbuilt barring system
Or as a last resort have to purchase on line downloads as replacements?
TIA

The old laptop may be overheating so try putting the hoover over air vents or open it up to clean it.
You can download an ISO ripper programme to your old laptop and use it to save your CD/DVDs as ISO files.
Copy these ISO files to your new laptop using a USB flash drive. In Windows 10 you have to right click the ISO file and click on Mount. This treats the ISO file like a virtual DVD-ROM and you can use it to install your programmes.
USB DVD drives are only about £10 new and delivered on ebay, so not too expensive anyway.

I don't think any new laptops have built in optical media drives (happy to be proved wrong)
External is your only option if you want to continue.
Ripping to other external media depends on the software and the protection mechanisms used.
Upgrade benefits, depends on the software, cost of the software and any improvements made as to whether it's beneficial to you to upgrade.

What about cloning the drive completely?
You get some weirdness if its the windows boot drive and you transfer it to a SSD sometimes - my old laptop started to die so I cloned the drive over to a SSD then popped the SSD in (there is some faff I cant remember in getting the drive recognised as a primary).
I think that avoided allot of issues - but its more hassle. I used a USB type HDD cradle thing to do it.

Just remember if you have issues on one laptop, just copying over folders in bulk may just transfer to problem to the new one.
What apps are they? Always reinstall from new if you can or even consider a new app that does the same thing and maybe better.
Also 4 yrs is not old for a laptop, unless you bought low end 4 yrs ago.
A reinstall and an SSD drive (if it doesnt have one) would make that run like new.
