Audi warranty = 36 months or is it?
Daughters car had 3 days to go before it expired when a fault occurred so phoned to book car in and was told it could not be seen for 3 weeks and it would then be at her cost as it would be out of warranty!
Is this fair or even legal?

The fault developed in the warranty period.

Surely that's the answer

Similar scenario here:
https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/60305/fa...

Essentially, if you report a fault on an item covered by the warranty within the warranty period they have to fix it. The fact that they don't have capacity to do so until after the warranty has expired is their fault, not yours.

You'd think a main dealer would know how a warranty works wouldn't you...

Did you call or did your daughter?

I assume you are now past 3 years?

I assume she *actually* called...

Kids.... just sayin'...

I called to book it in.

It is now past 3 years but not when the fault was seen and notified.

Kid she may be but she can actually read unlike your good self! wink

To be fair, its not 100% clear who called in your OP.

Ring again, explain the concept of the fault that developed during the warranty period being notified to the dealer during the warranty period. If you encounter some understanding issues, go up to Audi UK customer services. It's not an edge case, so should be a short conversation.

What difference does it make who called in to book?
The point of the post was that Audi through one of their representatives believe that it is when they have time to look at the fault not when it occurred that matters!

The fault occurred whilst the vehicle was covered by the warranty.
Your only issue now may be proving it, however assuming they record calls that might not be too difficult.
I would call them again and ask for it to be booked in for a warranty repair and ask for confirmation of this in writing (email).

Most Audi dealers use a call centre for bookings of this nature - so its unusual you were given duff info.

As for who rang, I was just pointing out that kids are sometimes a bit lax with things so maybe that was part of the issue... but on this occasion it looks like you were acting as their PA as is often the case with "kids" so its not an issue.

FWIW I have been in this exact situation where defect has occurred inside the warranty period but the actual work has been carried out well past the expiry date due to parts / workshop diary etc.

I know the fault occurred under warranty the point of the post was that Audis representative is telling customers that their warranty is not actually 36 months but 36months minus the lead time of the workshop.
When challenged on this she said the car must be seen within the warranty period which is total 8ollox but was asking about the legality of this.

I agree which is why I say you should re-contact them as they are 100% wrong.

Again, what's the fault?

You may quite properly get a different answer from the manufacturer between a "sudden failure" and "wear & tear".

It’s a small electrical fault with the washer cover for the headlights, I didn’t think wear and tear was covered under warranty anyway?

Outrageous they tried the expired warranty Lark. They are 100% on the hook. Wear & Tear items will be covered to the extent the driver can't accelerate their wear (clutches, tyres). I've had suspension parts replaced under warranty (18 months). The key being, what is normal life of said items and I wouldn't expect your issue to raise its head inside many years.
