Just got home this afternoon, whilst I was out my wife and son went to see a certain company known for purchasing most vehicles. When they got there they were basically ripped off, I know that they are known for not giving overly much, however, they identified one MOT where the garage had clearly input a 2 instead of a 9 and claimed that the car had been clocked so knocked another £1k off the price. The salesman then fast talked/bullied my wife and son into agreeing the sale. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my phone handy, however, my BIL was called and said to walk away (good advice). Naturally, there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do at this point other than vent on here.

Does the mileage issue show up on HPI?

If so then the car isn't HPI clear, which makes a material difference to the value of the car.

They did sell, despite the instructions not to.

No idea about HPI but you can see it on the Govt MOT check website.

Just for clarity, are you livid at the wife or car buyers?

My wife would most definitely hold me fully accountable for not being available mind you laugh

So your wife called you BIL, who told her to walk away

Presumably she did….so what’s the problem?

Must admit I'm a bit perplexed as well. OP, who did what now?

If they thought the car was clocked I very much doubt they'd have bided on the car.

Are you venting your fury, or giving advice, OP?

Question is why did you let your wife and son take the car to get a price?

OP it's your fault for not going yourself or giving her clear instructions to walk away if the price is below X agreed.

Glad I'm not the only person that has experiences like these. A couple of years ago I made the mistake of mentioning that my mum had a slight blow on her exhaust while I was doing another job to it.

She took it to kwik fit the next day, who replaced the exhaust all the way to the cat because the cat couldn't be saved (I'm suspicious about that especially as it's a honda jazz).

New exhaust was so st that it sounds like a boy racer car, and the back box rotted through and fell off 12 months later while I was driving it. This was replaced by kwik fit for free of course, but it is still st and sounds like a boy racer car now. I'm sure itll fall off in another 12 months, and it rattles against the body of the car even though there's no rubbers missing.

If the OP was buying a car and it had a discrepancy in the mileage he would not want to pay full price for it so why should they? Its a bit of non issue really.

So would I, nothing worse than having an option to take advice, taking the offer of good advice and then ignoring it

Yes I am cross with my wife, but also not entirely happy with the company for brow beating her into accepting £800 for a £2k car. Yes there was a mileage discrepancy first entry said MOT fail 69,017 miles, next entry said MOT Pass 62,020: next entry was something like 75k miles, annual average mileage was 6k miles, clearly, the MOT station input 2 instead of a 9 but no, we had changed the clocks in the car.

Oh, and it’s all my fault for not taking my phone, just because my BIL said walk away was not enough, I should have said walk away but couldn’t/didn’t.

Annoying, and sounds to be in line with the tactics of the company in question. However your wife did have the opportunity to walk away, so let's not be too hard on them.

Does the company in question give any cooling-off period or are all sales final? Can you dispute it at a later time? (If so then do so ASAP.)
