I've got a '99 500, about 39000 miles, all std AFAIK apart from a modded exhaust which was done at Fernhurst's before I bought the car from them. This is my first TVR and I'm not sure that its revving high enough or freely enough. At about an indicated 5200-5400rpm it sounds as if its run out of puff and revving it any more achieves very little in forward motion so I don't bother.I went out in Pebbledashes 500 and his seemed to rev happily around to the 6300 mark and didn't sound so strained. Is there anything wrong with my car? Also the warm (hot) weather has given it quite a pronounced pink at the upper rev limits.I did read that they could run weaker at the top end so is this linked/curable.It normally uses Texaco Super and fuel consumption is normal(22MPG mixed driving)Its due a service soonish and its still under warranty with Fernhursts.Suggestions please!!

Thanks

Edited to read..It neither seems any slower or any faster than any other Griffs I've mixed with on runs

Over 6k rpm, although I rarely take it that high !!

Much over 6k regulary on a long stoke (std rods / piston) is not a good idea. Fine on Short stroke 4.0 they like to rev. Max power is around 5.6 sor going past 5.8 (to drop it back into meat of the power) is taking life out of the engine.

Peak bhp on my std 500 comes at just over 5,100 so anything past that doesn't make sense. However, it will pull cleanly through 6k when needed. Not in 5th mind you, although I've certainy tried!!

It makes sense if you want to be closer to the max power RPM on an upshift?

Mine will rev to 6k and it has been better since the piper cam.

Wouldnt DREAM of taking mine even into the yellow line at 5600. Am sticking to max torque at 5000 and no more. Call me old fashioned

and aint made of dosh for rebuilds

Scorcher, I'm pretty sure Pebbledash has an upgraded cam which would explain the free revving. Mine has a standard cam and will rev to 6000 without trouble but I only ever get there on track and only then if there's no point changing up (ie approaching a braking point). On the road I rarely go over 5000 which feels/sounds plenty enough.

They're all a bit different and it sounds like yours has lots of torque so I wouldn't worry about it.

yup, MC2 (the old 404h design) cam with stage 3 heads. Lost a tad of grunt over the standard cam etc, but improved mid/high end power. also very free reving

Yup, think it is down to the cam.

Mine used to have littel after 5500.

High lift now means it keeps pulling up to 6200. Will go to 6500 but no point.

No real point in going much near 6000 as you are just buying trouble.

I think what Scorcher was refering to is that mine reves VERY freely to over 6k. it does not start too run our of puff before this.
I tend to use this part of the rev range with caution, ie only when I need it("interesting" overtakes and when on a mission ) as it not doing many favours to the internals of the engine.

However I did notice with the STD Cam that once beyond 4.5k the motor was realy struggling keep going, getting less and less willing to rev as the revs got higher.

I have actualy bounced of the rev limmiter a couple of times with the new CAM .

Woohoo, I can't wait until my new cam is fitted.

I loved the engine in standard form but little more free breathing above 4500rpm will be nice

Rebuilds will come round ALOT faster when these engines are used over 6k for extended periods. Fine if all steel and breathed on - but std there are no trick bits and a long crack. 4.0 (short stroke) will have less bhp to give but give it up higher in th range.

I can't see me reving past 6000rpm very often even with an H404 but it should be better from 4500-6000 than standard.

I must add that normal play time is limited to <5.5k as above this the engine is on a mission to destruction. if you wish to use this range all the time SERIOUS money is required to fettle the motor and one should expect to replace lots of parts.
I have not done all this, but as my CAM was shot and the heads cracked. So I opted to have them changed for non STD parts.
It is nice to have the motor now not become totaly asthmatic when the revs rise beyond 4.5k..
note however these cams can have a tendancy to be even more lumpy low down than the STD cam, the shunting that hapens on some 500's at low speed revs can become very anoying.....
