Hello all.

I am a newbie to both Pistonheads and to TVR. I have been dredging the site to find a Chimaera to suit my needs (a huge grin and some topless weekend jaunts ) and have finally put down a deposit - will be picking it up at the weekend if all goes to plan.

Was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a suitable insurer.

Appreciate your time and comments.

Rich.

I,m with MSM.Best bet is to do a search as there are lots and lots to choose from and lots and lots that won't want to insure you or your new car or want more money than your prepared to pay .

do a search and spend an afternoon ringing round, as I have today.

Variations by a factor of 100%, some will and won't suit some people...

also join the TVRCC for discounts on some policies and do ride drive courses for discounts on others...

Peart are good, but join TVRCC first.

I agree with 2SB () Peart were best for me and include trackdays; Tescos have (surprisingly) been good for others (and don't include track days).

Expect a surcharge from the specialists if you haven't driven a hi-bhp sports car for the last year - apparently this goes down if you renew your insurance on an intact car! A kind of 'No TVR Claims / tree incidents' bonus.

Norwich union direct. ( no track days ).

It all depends on age, points, area you live in and the use for the car. ( everyday/limited milage ).

Im an everyday user about 10,000 miles a year with 3 points on my licence for speeding. Im 26 with full no claims paying £900 fully comp with protection.

For me, the only place I could get a sensible quote was Norwich union direct - and I spent a whole day on the phone. Qutes varied from the lowest at NU £737 to the highest at one of the so called 'specialists' at £1600.

I am 37, 1 years no claims discount only, 4 recorded claims (not accidents!) in the last 3 years - so I thought £737 for fully comp was pretty good !

I've just changed from Mannings, who were perfectly OK, to Sunninghill because they offered better track day cover (all ATDO days as well as the TVRCC days offered by Mannings). It was an extra £7, bringing it to a grand total of just under £400 for fully comp, 3000 miles limited for a '97 Chim 450. I am an old fart and I live in the middle of nowhere, though.

Direct Line have quoted me happy, i saved around 650 quid this year when changing from chrurchill (screentrade)
My policy was £1400 last year and the requote was 1200, so like i say i shopped around and was very suprised Direct Line came up trumps massively better than anyone else in fact at £780 and as i pay in installments this cuts my monthly repayments by nearly 100 quid a month!
Excesses on the policy are very sensible too.

I am 33 with 2 years no claims, no claims in the last 5 years, no convictions.

good luck

Hey Mojo,

Im also new to the game (had 94 400HC Chim for 2 days now) and got a decent premium from A Manning £870.

Considering I have no years no claims (no need to on a classic car 1995 and older), im a 26 yo Aussie and not been insured in the UK.

It helps to have driven a similar BHP car previously though. Joining TVRCC gets your premium down a bit too with A Manning.

I spent 2 days ringing place after place after place getting all sorts of quotes. The effort should pay off in the end.

Good luck

I just renewed with priviledge, they beat Sunninghill, but this was without track days. Guess its best to have a ring/web around. The URL for priviledge is www.privilege.co.uk/motor/index.htm

My first year renewal with a specialist saw no reduction despite no claims so I switched. After shopping around a bit, Tescos were the cheapest at £1100 (down from £1600). I'm 27, full no claims, 3 points for a camera in 2001, BUT it lives on the drive in SE1 and is my only driver - so I don't think that's too bad. Curiously, when I put my girlfriend on the policy they refunded me another £25. Quite how the risk reduces with her behind the wheel I'm not sure

Many thanks people.

As was suggested, I took some time to phone loads of places and get a few e-mail quotes.

The variation was immense - some not even offering a quote.

It seems that as I have a co. car (and have done for over 4yrs) I have no NCB. Consequently this has pushed things up a bit.

For those of you interested, the best quote was from Admiral who cam in at £1200 and dropped it a further £30 when I put the good lady on it as well. Pretty steep, but this time next year I'm sure someone will quote me happier - and until then I'll have a huge grin if all goes to plan tomorrow

Many thanks for your time an comments once again

You may be able to get a NCB if your current insurer can write you a letter saying you have had zero accidents, and a good driving history.

POD,

yeah, tried that one but no-one will ackowledge it unless I am 'surrendering' my co. car.

Have to say, the thought of burning around in the chim all day for work puts a big smile on my face, but there's no chance the boss is going to pay for the fuel / servicing / running costs if it's not the co. wagon

Tesco did mine this year, just a few quid more than the TVRCC discounted but restricted mileage quote from Mannings.

Here's a thing... I spent days searching when I bought my Chim a month or so back.. second car so I had to start with zero no claims.

Specialists were all well over a grand (I even joined the TVRCC and it made very little difference), Norwich Union Direct was the best at around £900. However, I got this down considerably by using Money Supermarket as a search engine

<a href="www.moneysupermarket.com/insurancedefault.asp"><a href="www.moneysupermarket.com/insurancedefault.asp">www.moneysupermarket.com/insurancedefault.asp</a></a>

They must pass on some of their margin from Norwich Union, which brought the £900 to £695, for exactly the same policy.

Even better, when I also put my other half on the policy as a second named driver, this came down further still to the £615.. Apparently, something to do with spreading the risk.

Very nice people or what?

Cheers for the heads up. It's a damn good site you found there - anyone looking for insurance would be able to save hours with this one.

Also, it confirmed that the policy I went for was one of the best around (so it's put my mind at rest as well!). They came up with one that was only £30 cheaper than Admiral. I will defo be checking that site out again this time next year and recommend it to anyone else on the hunt.

Cheers chap.
