Long story short, one of the front stanchions is pitted due to a worn sleeve inside the damper body. Common problem apparently.

Are stanchions included in the rebuild cost, or is it just valves, seals, oil and gas? I would hope they are being a wear part, but if not, can a stanchion be re-chromed for reasonable money?

Any recommendations on Ohlins rebuild centres that don't cost a fortune?

TIA

By stanchion do you mean rod?

If it's pitted, repairing would involve removing the chrome, rebuilding the surface, machining back to size and then replating. It would be dramatically cheaper to replace the rod. For a mass produced damper, that will probably mean it's cheaper to replace the damper.

Yeah the damper rod, sorry.

In the end I fitted a 'get me by' suspension kit for less than half the cost of rebuilding the Ohlins, and it's actually just as good, if not better in some scenarios. I don't know if that means the Ohlins are over rated, or if I got a duff set to begin with.

I am loathe to throw away something that cost me £2500, so I'll revisit this in the future.

That might mean the Ohlins were the wrong spec, or wrongly adjusted, or in bad condition, or any combination. But if you're happy with the price and performance of the replacements, that's really all that matters.
