Nice pub between Rugby and St Albans?

Im trying to find a nice village to meet friends for lunch between us in St Albans and them in Rugby.

Putting this into a route shows Milton Keynes is a rough middle point - are there any nice villages with decent pubs in the surrounding areas there?

The Swan at Salford - easily reached just off J13 M1 :-)
