I watch quite a lot of news and see so many stories of the post-covid economy and climate change.. As well as the huge amount of fatalities, covid has cost the world trillions, but as travel opens up, America and most of Europe can now fly to the UK, these are two polar opposites aren't they? Short-term thinking of personal livelihoods and freedom will prevail over climate.... Opinions?

Not a bad subject.
Personally I think a void will open up between those who can afford to travel abroad and those who can't. Put another way for the forseeable future as many obstacles as possible will be put in the way of Joe Public.
To overcome the obstacles you'll be able to do if you have the dosh..

It will be the modern version of Indulgence - those with the money can pay their sins away, the rest have to suffer.

Probably. Carbon credits are already a modern form of medieval indulgences. Sure you can still pollute, you just buy absolution from those that don't.

An utterly corrupt system, just like the racket the Vatican ran. Although they did get St Peters out of it, so there's that.

Afraid I have to agree... That well worn cliche... "Don't do as we do, do as we say" rings out once again.....!

Very true. My boss preaches "half the population might die in the next 20 years" a la greta, "we're all going to have to get used to flying around less". Then the month after, goes for 3 weeks heli-skiing in canada. But it's alright, because he bought some carbon offsetting.
What he really means is, the plumber who comes to fix my toilet, and the people who serve me lunch are going to have to stop flying for their one week in benidorm, while I still have 4 exotic holidays a year.

It's a form of communism, as George Orwell said All animals are equal but some are more equal than others,
all dressed up as a facade of we are trying to save the planet .
Hopefully the sheep will wake up before it's too late.

I must be missing something whereby air travel has got more expensive. BA are currently running a sale on flights to Europe. Ryan and Sleazy are running promotions. Biz class tickets to the Carib are the same price as they were pre Covid.

You are a little out of touch if you think your plumber is going to Benidorm for a week hehe

2 jabs, 1 LFT before you go, possibly one when you land (with possibility of quarantine rather than holiday), PCR before you come back, up to 3 PCR when you get back and a possible quarantine hotel if they have changed the rules. What's that about £8000 on top of a holiday for a family of 4.

Alternatively have ministerial or business exemption and fly to red list with little to no consequences

i would think these fine margin cut price airlines(not BA obvs hehe) are the first to feel the pressure of the oncoming green tidal wave.

Is it desperation before the fuel price hike?

Jabs and LFTs are free. PCRs cost the money, one before you go and one when you are back. The quarantine hotel you avoid rather simply. So, no - not £8k at all.

Ministerial travel has always existed outside of the travel rules for normal ppl, be it chaps on business travel or grockles. There is no change there.

Its never been equal between biz travel and grockle travel. If you think otherwise, then that is your ignorance.

No but the green taxes are making it more unequal, who will it effect more, the poor not the rich.

Quite.

Air travel is cheaper than ever.

Although it’s an easy target for finger pointing in the media and attacking the well off, it’s going to be energy production, road transport and agriculture where the big changes occur.

Some markets like some of Scandinavia are seeing a reduction in long haul (the Greta factor) but it’s not caused by tax it’s consumer driven.
