Evening all,
Having recently had a year in a 981 GT4, which was probably the best car I’ve ever owned, I’m now contemplating a 991.1 GTS and wondered if anyone had gone down a similar route?

I very sadly had a large accident in my GT4 about a month ago resulting in it being a total loss, and I’m now on the hunt for a replacement. Thinking more deeply, post accident, about what I want from a car nowadays, it’s clear a slightly more comfortable, yet still high performing car is what I’m after, and the GTS seems to fit the bill. I’ve only ever driven a 991.2GTS, which was insane but left me a little cold from a noise perspective (albeit I was in a decatted V12 Vantage at the time so comparison was always going to be difficult) and my budget is currently about £80k so that probably precludes a 991.2 anyway.

I’d be really interested to hear any thoughts or advice from anyone that has experience of both cars. Doesn’t matter if you went the other way either, from a 911 to a GT4, I’d love to know your impressions.

I’d also like to hear your thoughts on current pricing, best places to buy (generally prefer buying from an OPC due to warranty piece of mind - rightly or wrongly) and if anyone is thinking of selling,, please feel free to drop me a PM. Thanks in advance. Mark

Hi Bincenzo. I went from a GT4 to a 991.1GTS and was happy with the change. Exhaust was surprisingly loud on the GTS and being PDK it did require a different driving style as unless in sort it would hang into the higher gear coming off roundabouts etc which could be frustrating.
I was changing my cars a lot in those days and I swapped it within 8k miles for a 991.2GTS which was one of my all time favourite cars. Yes a little quieter, but faster, more direct and sharper - I regretted selling that after 8 k miles as well.
If I could stretch to a .2 personally I would, but if not the .1 is an awesome car and last of the naturally aspirated to boot.

Thanks for the reply, very interesting as I’m looking at a PDK rather than a manual, which are pretty rare anyway I think. The .2 I drove a while back was epic, so direct and blisteringly fast and I suspect the noise would be less of an issue nowadays. I’m hoping to be able to hold out until year end to see how prices are, as surely there has to be some seasonal softening? I miss the GT4 terribly and I’m getting itchy feet to buy again, but now would be a very silly time I think. Thanks again.

Went from GT4 to 991.2 C4GTS - didn’t miss the GT4 at all.
Everything the GT4 could do, the 991.2 would do - better.

Mine had 4WD and RWS and the way it would hook up out of a corner, with that turbo torque…. Addictive in away it never was in the GT4.
And the PDK… why would anyone want to change gears manually - these new engines are designed for PDK, anyone who thinks otherwise is just plain wrong.
If you want a manual that’s a joy to use you’ve got to go back to a 997 or better still to 993/964

You forgot to add “IMHO”
Plenty of people much prefer the Manual gearbox on the later cars.
4WD, RWS, PDK……wouldn’t be everyone’s choice

Indeed. They’re 3 things I’d personally look to avoid. It doesn’t make either of us wrong, I can be sure of that.

Furry-muff - “IMHO”

But interested as to why you’d avoid RWS?

Haha, your manual gearbox slagging of the GT4 is hilarious. Owned various manual Turbos and 993 and the GT4 box is light years ahead in every way. One of the true greats.

Again IMHO - well actually not just mine, the gear shifting action is/was great ( better than a 993?? Doubt it) . The problem was that unless you are using it on track, coupled with that engine you could go 1st - 3rd and leave it there pretty much all day long unless you wanted to give your ears a rest in which case 1-3-6.
Job done. A 718 GT4 PDK, now that would be an interesting proposition.

I do a regular B road route pretty much every dry Sunday morning, and my 964 993 997.2RS are all more engaging and rewarding to drive than the 981GT4 ever was or could hope to be.
Of course people use cars in different ways and what’s good for the goose etc..

Went from a 718 GT4 to a T so similar thought process. 911 for me all day everyday but I'm a 911 fan and always will be.

Thanks for the replies chaps, seems I’m heading in the right direction. I didn’t really want to start an argument mind you, but that’s PH for you…

997 GTS manual to 981 spyder to 991.2GTS (PDK) with a 987.2 S in-between. I actually prefer quieter cars these days and the spyder noise wasnt my thing after a while. I would agree that the 991.2GTS is the best as a daily with effortless grunt etc. In short it goes how I expected which the others never did bar the 997.

Update:
Thanks for all the replies, I’ve placed a deposit on a 991.1 PDK GTS in Lava Orange. Really appreciated people’s answers, so thank you.
Would like to add the Porsche Graphic on the doors and change the clear rears for standard (it’s a Private sale) and have full PPF applied . Other than that, it’s good to go.
