I need to renew my annual insurance policy and need European cover for a contiguous 120-150 days per year (one long trip per year). I'm having great difficulty with nearly all the UK insurers who don't seem to offer anything like this. Some offer 90 days and within that group most are maximum 30 days per trip. The AA offer an overseas policy but you seem to have to drive a Morris Minor or something similar. I have a 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo and Liverpool Victoria who include 180 days European cover have just doubled my premium, hence the need to change.

I have an address in Germany (stated as a requirement by the AA). I also have a completely clean record on everything and am in my 40's. Should be easy I thought :(

Any ideas where to go that will be reasonable?

Thanks

I found one company who could provide the European cover but not including 3rd party - they wanted £2,500 That's nearly double what I was quoted for my renewal which gives me 180 days and I think that is excessive because it's nearly double what I'm paying now!

Chubb masterpiece policy gives unlimited so give Footman James a try. It's the only one I could find though.

Thanks for your investigation but I've tried Footman James already , they quoted more than £1800

Basically I'm paying £750 now with LV and they have hiked it to £1350 for my new renewal with no explanation. My circumstances (risk) haven't changed since last year. I fact they have got better since haven't made any claims for yet another year.

The car is much safer out of the UK with regards theft because it's not attractive being RHD on the continent. Also I can prove I have driven many 000's of miles in many EU countries without incident. However, this info isn't interesting to any of the many insurance companies I have contacted who seem to offer the same old pre-packaged drivel.

Yes. You only need to be registered in Germany. Insurance conditions are way more competitive in Germany from what I can see. Some ins. co. even accept NCB brought from the UK.

Fully comp insurance, known as "Voll Casco Versicherung" is much more expensive in Germany. Most people insure their cars for TPFT. A colleague of mine pays 1200 euros (£800) for an old (10 years) Japanese saloon car. He's 33 years old and no claims. They don't take into account speeding od DD over here (The insurance companies have no access to that info due to Data Protection).

Fully Comp for my car would be several £1000's of pounds in Germany plus the complication of it being RHD.

I've just got an online quote for a 930 for my circumstances (29yrs, street parking, every driver, 35% NCB, unlimited mileage per year, €100m 3rd party cover) and Vollkasko with €300 excess is €614,77 per year; third party is €277,30.

When you want to try yourself, you don't need to register or anything but knowledge in German is useful : http://huk24.de/produkte/kfz/index.jsp?site=kfz
(It's not the cheapest, but is has an easy to use interface)

Thanks for the tip. I tried that site with the help of a German colleague. Came up with €2,300 which is comparable to the expensive end in the UK. All my entries were clean.

Tried another site www.da-direckt.de and they wouldn't even quote for my car

With what kind of NCB did you have a quote?
www.da-direkt.de quoted me €901,01 for the same circumstances as above, albeit with €500 excess. This is with 35% NCB; 100% would be €2574.57

I know that Allianz may accept your UK NCB (years with no claims, rather than the original UK rebate), when you insure with an agent and bring a written confirmation from your previous UK insurer. Depending on years with no claims, they can go as low as 30% of the original price.

When you have to start a new policy without NCB, then you'll pay 140% for 3rd party and 115% for Kasko (when you have your driver's license for some years), but drop to 100% after six months IIRC.

I entered 10 years for each of the no claims entries.

After entereing all the info, once da-direkt had details of the type of car (993tt) it said, sorry, we can't offer a quote on that type of car.
