Anyone else experienced similar, just been told that a colleague of mine who is consistently lazy, barely gets the bare minimum of work done in a day and was on the verge of formal action for this has punted at a job vacancy for significantly more money while our manager is on annual leave and has been given the job. Me and the rest of my colleagues arent happy as were always finishing his work and chasing him for stuff and this seemingly has fallen into his lap. Are we just being unreasonable or is my frustration justified. Its hard to be happy for someone thats undeserving of such an occurence

Not much you can do, hopefully this step up will expose his shortcomings for everyone else to see.

Or are you now in his chain of command?

He isn't the first person to receive a promotion who isn't the best for the job, nor will he be the last.

What feedback did you get from your own interview for that role?

Spent my entire working life watching this kind of scenario unfold while the people who do all the work struggle on derisory wages. Basically, hard work does not pay. Being a complete waste of space who happens to be liked by the right people does. The end.

I had one of my staff nicked by "head office" (the branch was also on the same site). I burst out laughing when I was told, I'd been talking to HR about how we could ease him out as he was useless.

I've no idea why he applied for, or accepted, the job. He was in panic and wanted to get out of it. He was gone in 3 months.

So he does the minimum of work he needs, gets you lot to pick up his slack, and consistently looks good by doing so?

Remind me who the mug is in this scenario? I'm surprised he hasn't been promoted before now - well done that man!

It is similar in Sales, if your good at your job, consistently hit targets then your never likely going to get a promotion simply because they do not want to loose those figures. However if your inconsistent your more likely to get a promotion or considered for a different role because it would not create such a black hole that needs to be filled.

This is the crucial question.

Your username is beginning to make some sense.

Seen this many times. It’s painful. One year I went for promotion, part of my evidence was having had to deal with the poor performance of another member of staff. Utterly bone idle.

I didn’t get through, which is fine as I had a shocker of an interview and I didn’t deserve it. But matey did. Renowned as one of the laziest members of the team and gets promoted.

Promptly went off with stress about 6 months later as, surprise surprise, they couldn’t cope with the demand of the higher rank!

He may well be lazy, but he cant be that lazy - he applied for a job, I assume had an interview and (probably) interviewed well (enough) to get the role.

I'm not being deliberately argumentative here, I do see where you are coming from back when I was a permie. It just seems he siezed his opportunity (manager off who I assume would of nerfed his chances of the role)?

He may be lazy but he has just demonstrated that he can be pro-active, engaging, strategic in his approach and in fact quite a clever chap.

Good effort .......

And if he is as bad as you say, his absent on holiday manager will surely be made up that he is no longer his concern and he can backfill him with someone with skills and attitude closer to your own.

There is a positive though, you and your colleagues wont have to "finish his work or chase him for stuff" going forward.

It’s a fairly standard occurrence. It’s what used to be known as giving them enough rope to hang themselves. The bosses have promoted your colleague to a position he won’t be able to cope with, they tend to walk, or give the bosses a solid reason to fire them, in short order normally.

Are they both smokers? When I was office based if you wanted to know what was going on you asked one of the smokers.
