I moved for NI to mainland in 2000 and brought two cars with me. Back then NI had a DVLA at Coleraine which didn't 'talk' to DVLA Swansea. So I effectively had to import the cars using a V55 form. Quite straightforward and free, and a week later GB V5 issued.

Now that Coleraine has closed, it's all handled from Swansea. So a lot simpler. Just change the keeper on the V5 like any other purchase of a vehicle. I think you can have the option of a mainland age related plate if you want to ditch the NI one.

There are no pitfalls you fill out the V5/do it online then drive onto the ferry & take the car home. smile
