I have been procrastinating for months about a gaming laptop and I have decided it has to be a Legion 5. Budget is a maximum of £1000 and this laptop seems perfect.

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gam...

AMD Ryzen 7 5800H Processor
RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 512 GB SSD
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6 GB
217 FPS when playing Fortnite at 1080p
Full HD screen / 120 Hz

However, it has the 250 NITS, 120HZ screen which is apparently rubbish and really putting me off.

For £799 I can get the following

https://www.box.co.uk/81Y6005TUK-Lenovo-Legion-5-I...

Intel Core i5-10300H Quad Core Processor
15.6" Full HD IPS 144Hz 100% sRGB Screen
Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
8GB DDR4 RAM
256GB M.2 NVMe SSD
Dedicated GeForce RTX 2060 6GB Graphics

This laptop has the much nicer screen, but I am concerned the processor may be a bottleneck? I am not concerned with the size of hard drive as I can upgrade that later on.

The games I want to play are the Call of Duty and Battlefield series of games. From what I understand, both of these machines would easily play all of the current games at 1080 High?

Ultimately should I go for the 2060 with the better screen, or the 3060 with a rubbish screen but far better specification?

I have been going through the same thing recently, but just ordered the Legion 5 Pro directly from Lenovo.

I watched a few videos by this chap - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oREdpnO5hi4 which helped my decision. He rated both the Legion 5 and the Legion 5 Pro. The most interesting thing, and reason why I ordered directly from Lenovo, is if you sign up to their newsletter, you get 10% off. That dropped a higher spec Legion 5 Pro down to £1250.\

The 3060 will drive the FHD screen better than a QHD screen etc as well, although you may want to upgrade the memory based on the above review(s).

For the £200 saving you're getting:
  • half the cores
  • half the SSD
  • last gen GPU
  • more heat
  • better screen? (can't see the screen spec on the Box site, but can see it's 144hz for the Box one vs the 120hz for the CPCW one)
Only you can judge whether it's worth it or not!

However, I'm surprised you can get a decent gaming laptop for sub £1000 now biggrin

I have last years Legion 5 laptop, it has a Ryzen 7 4800H and RTX2060 GFX. I had a HP Omen before this, which always ran hot with noisy fans and a power supply that was often too hot to pick up after use.

Found the Legion superb, its on 24/7 as I use it to run a graphic type business from, it's also been mining crypto for 6 months and I do the odd bit of gaming on it in an evening. Had no problems with it whatsoever and it seems to play games just fine. Recently ran through "The Medium" on it, which must have been testing it as the fans ramp up to what I'd class as noisy, all other games never seem to result in loud fans however.

Would recommend.

Yes, I have basically been going around in circles and must have watched every video on YouTube. Already signed up to the news letter so was thinking the 2060 would cost me £720 and the 3060 £900.

The issue has been serious budget creep as initially I was toying with just getting the 1650 as they were available for £549 last month. Then it is only a bit more for a 1660ti, bit more for a 2060, bit more for a 3060, oh but the screen is not good so bit more for a Pro.

Before you know it my cheap £549 gaming laptop is going to cost me £1250.

Then I start looking at the Acer Nitro Pro 5 3060 which is available for £879 and then read about the poor performance and how it is only an 85 Watt version compared to the 130W of the Legion.

Sometimes I wish I didn't bother doing this level of research as I am sure I would have been perfectly happy with whatever I purchased.

Be careful, research is needed imo! I had the same train of thought as you, so went for a HP Omen, same specs as the Lenovo I have, but was £200 cheaper. It was a lot, lot louder under gaming to the point of needing headphones. The fans seemed to run all the time, even when doing basic tasks. The power adaptor was often to hot to pick up after gaming. It also wouldn't run games as smoothly, which I'm putting down to excess heat. I found it so poor I sent it back, spent the extra on the Lenovo and it's vastly better even though it's the same basic specification.

Do you research, spend a bit more, it's worth it in the end.

I definitely want a Legion 5, and I agree it is worth spending the extra, I think I just have to mentally build myself up to it. I suspect the point has arrived already as I am currently working through the Call of Duty series and my work laptop has decided that Ghosts is the point where it cannot cope anymore.

You need to be aware that ordering directly from Lenovo is going to incur a reasonable wait. Mine currently says 6 weeks+ to ship, I am not desperate for it so am happy to wait. Otherwise you might be better off ordering what you want from somewhere that has it in stock for a bit more. I have seen the 3060 Legion 5 on ebay, new, for around the £900 mark.
