Advice on mid size family hatch petrol 10k

Just sold my old and rusty SG9 XT and looking for something more "sensible" up to 6y/10k (10.5k max).
Narrowed my search to the Leon/Octavia (1.5 tsi), Focus (1.5 eb) or Mazda3.
There's no daily commute, just lots of short 1-2 mile trips around the city and 2-3/month motorway journeys. Hybrid might make most sense but I'm not convinced yet.
Are those tsi/ecoboost engines still a time bomb? What's the latest Mazda situation regarding rust? I've obviously bad experience regarding japanese car and rust. I do like the fact Mazda's got heated seats and a NA engine.
Am I missing something? Would Astra or Giulietta be a good option (my first owned car was 164 V6 and I love alfas)? The wife isn't too keen on alfa after 147 experience though. Astra in Elite Nav trim seems cool although I can't find one with 1.6t engine atm. My mechanic tells me to stay away from German though, especially VAG.
