I understand lead/rhythm in a band like the Shadows but what's the difference in a band like the Beatles?

Nothing too technical and assume no musical knowledge please.

In the Beatles George would typically provide any riffs and solos, John would play rhythm. Back in the ussr is a fair example.

John did however play some lead stuff and of course Paul would always help out if needed.

A great example of the difference is Malcolm and Angus Young. Malcolm providing a great foundation for the song, Angus ripping about riffing and soloing whilst dressed as Jimmy Krankie.

Rhythm usually strums, and lead usually does the fiddly bits.

(as un-musical as I can make it).

I saw the Bootleg Beatles recently

They were brilliant by the way.

If you read the cover of With the Beatles the notes for All My Loving it mentions George's slightly C&W solo. When I saw the BBs I saw 'George' play that solo.
If you discount that bit what else was he playing? Hank played what you recognise as Apache even if you take out the other instruments. If you remove John, Ringo and Paul from All My Loving would you recognise what George was playing as that song? Or, would what John was playing tell you what the song was? Basically I don't understand how the song is made.

I play lead in our band, I also play rhythm when there is no lead bits to play (which is a lot of the time in out band ). The difference with the Shadows to most bands is that unless they were with Cliff they were an instrumental band so Hank would play the melody.

Re all my lovin, have a look at https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/the-beatles/a...

you can solo and mute the lead and rhythm parts and see the difference, for most of it George is playing what I would call a Rhythm part, working with Johns part.

^ That

Rhythm plays (say) an E major chord (E / G# / B)

Lead plays lines based on the E major scale (E / F# / G# / A / B / C# / D#)

Have you seen The Analogues?

They're from Holland and are probably the closest you can get to the real thing, closer probably because even if all the Beatles were still alive and went to the effort of playing Sgt Pepper live, I doubt they would do it as well as this
