Recently purchased an approved used X3 M40i (2018 model), which comes with 21” alloys and RFT’s.
Looking at getting a second set of genuine 19” 698M alloys and having a ‘square (tyre) set up’.
This leads me on to a few questions:
Any recommendations for all season tyres for this vehicle ?
Is it possible to have this set up without TPMS or is the car set so alloys must have TPMS ?
Also, would this change invalidate the approved used car warranty ?

thanks

IIRC these use 245/50/19 - the only all-season tyres I came across are the Pirelli Cinturato P7 RFTs, and you will need a TPMS with them (a) because otherwise you'll have no idea when you get a puncture and (b) you'll get the TPMS warning on all the time.

I have been looking for decent all season tyres. Currently run summer and winter wheels. My winter wheels are 245 50 19. Not many decent all season tyres in that size. I have run my winter tyres all year round and they have been fine. Maybe an option depending on where you live.

Did you end up getting 19's? Be interested to know if the ride is much improved over 21" RFT's. I've just picked up a 2020 M40D and my only complaint is the firm, fidgety ride on anything but smooth roads. I'm loathed to swap all the tyres when they're virtually new, unless it makes a marked improvement but could perhaps justify a second set of smaller wheels easier as I expect this would make a bigger difference. I assume 19's fit ok over the MSport brakes?

Apologies for not updating this and thanks for the replies. In response, no i haven't purchased a set of 19" alloys, still looking for a clean, straight set ideally with TPMS valves fitted. Failing that, I probably replace the 21" RFT's with none run flats and carry a can of tyre weld gunk.

I have an M40d that has 20s as standard and also run 19s as a winter set.
It is definitely smoother on the winter set up but not massively so.

Looks quite the sleeper without the massive 21s smile Think I'll keep my eyes open for a set..

Just to update this, I’ve purchased a set of 4 x 19” 698M alloys fitted with TPMS with worn tyres. These are not perfect, but no curb rash, good enough for my winter tyres. Also purchased a set of Continental ContiWinter Contact TS 860 (R/F) tyres, got these for just £700 fully fitted via Asda tyres.
Predictably the ride has improved, nowhere as crashy as the standard 21”, only done 150 miles but glad I made the switch.
As for the car, its been back to BMW twice recently, firstly to have the sunroof seal replaced and secondly to have rear back box replaced due to flaking paint on the inner tail pipes, all covered by the BMW warranty.

Nice work on the wheels OP. I have similar car in order and have been debating winters although all the reading I’ve done suggests they’re only effective under 7C ambient temp (and after 7C their effectiveness is impaired and indeed they wear prematurely). So today was 0C in the morning but 12C as I write this now (in south U.K.). Could I ask what conditions you have over winter where you are? Likewise our one will come with 21” RFTs.

All my local tyre places have said not to bother with winters and they don’t have any facility to look after summers while the winters are on etc. I saw some article the other day where you need to store them flat, covered once you have cleaned them after they’ve been taken off.

Cheers.

Im in North West England, with frequent trips to North Wales and over to the Yorkshire coast. The original wheels/tyres are stored in a cellar, which is relatively dry and away from the elements.

That’s very helpful many thanks - yes no such road trips planned over winter as much as we’d love to. Definitely something to consider as we’ve travelled to the continent in previous years where these are more the norm and in some cases legally required. Cheers for the info.

Intriguing comment about the back box being replaced due to paint flaking in rear tail pipe. I asked my local dealer to sort out this on my M40i and he said the initial response was no re warranty claim but he was going to fight it on my behalf. So far heard nothing back! Which BMW dealer do you use?

Hi, It was Williams, Stockport. I simply asked them to explain why the black, matt paint was peeling off the inner of the exhaust. Their answer was, we'd like to exchange it for a new one, looked like this:

I bought a genuine BMW set of 20” winters which had tpms but weren’t run flat tyres. They look awesome and hardly any different to the 21’s … second mortgage was needed to get them though !

Unsure when they will go on as weather odd atm. My bet is a lot nearer Xmas.
