First car advice?

Hi forum, i’m looking for a first car. Budget around 1500-2000. A lot of mk5 Golf that appear for sale at this price are the 1.6 FSI is this engine best avoided? I do like the look of mk4 Golfs although unsure whether they’d be knackered by now. See plenty of A3s advertised too mostly derv

I won’t be doing diesel mileage although I’d be open to a diesel if it had no dpf or if giving it a run to regen would sort it out.
Don’t want a really small car i.e. golf not polo size
Understand it’s not going to be a flashy car but would ideally be after a better spec of whatever car I get.

I’m 22 been passed for a few months. Focus seems the sensible choice, just don’t get that excited about how they look both inside and out. Is there any difference going for say a facelift oppose to older? Not into Vauxhalls although the astra looks good vfm. Kia looks too grandad for me. I’m in sunny Scotland and the used car market seems to be rubbish right now, no way you’d get an Astra that age+mileage for 2k up here. What do you think of the Golfs/A3?

Maybe the Volvo C30 will work for you, be prepared to travel a bit & you should land a good car.

The only budget mk5 golf I would touch is the 1.9tdi, personally I’d be looking at a focus or Astra for that money
