Hello all,

this is my first post on here and I'm hoping someone may be able to advise. Okay so first of all my car: I have a 2015 (mk3) Ford Focus 1.0L 125ps ecoboost car.

It is a second hand car with a very limited service history. Love the car except around 2 months ago the check engine light came on, I used Forscan and it showed me a fault code of P00420 - Catalytic system not optimal. Anyway, I ran Cataclean through the engine and cleared off the fault code and thought nothing more of it.

Approximately 3 weeks ago as the car I found to be rather sluggish when going up hill, especially when changing from 1st to 2nd gear and so, I installed a high flow pipercross air filter and then 'swiss cheesed' the bottom of the airbox and I also had the engine re-mapped as a tuning station.

Fast forward to yesterday and the check engine light again came on. I plugged in Forscan again and it showed me that P00420 was back but this time with also an additional fault code - P0088 - Fuel rail pressure too high.

Now, this morning I took the car for a short run and when pulling away I could hear what could only be described as a metallic grinding/whining sounds coming from under the bonnet. So, when I got back home I opened up the bonnet - and although the engine temps on the cockpit gauge seemed normal, even the metal bonnet stay was quite hot and the air rising from the engine bay was akin to opening an over door.

Is anyone able to offer me any advice on what could be wrong and possible next steps ? TIA

Collapsed cat causing high cat temp & fault code.

Would also limit power as the honeycomb will be able to flow about 10% of what it should.

A good test would be to tap the cat with a mallet & see if you can hear bits rattling inside.

Thank you - Would that also cause the high fuel rail pressure P0088 too ?
