IMO the recent tie up between Sony and Konica could be very good for the industry.

Canon and Nikon has had their own way for a long time.

Third party lens manufacturers always look to these 2 when producing new stuff, leaving the likes of Konica/Minolta as an afterthought.

The power of Sony should go a long way to shifting this balance.

Then take the marketing force behind Sony. I would say they have to potential to become a very big seller in a very short time, taking plenty of sales from the big 2 on the way.

Anyone else got any thought?

Can Canon & Nikon do anything to counteract this?

Another industry-driven reply from mua.

They'd do quite well in the compact market. The Sony brand carries clout. But to make in-roads into the Pro and Pro-Am sectors they'd have to work really hard.

There are so many viable levelling competitors in these sectors already - Pentax, Minolta, Kodak, Olympus etc., and none of them are a patch on the two big boys.

I think that unless they release a cracker of a body and a fully comprehensive array of lenses to go along with it (assuming they use their own proprietry mount), and crucially only if they do so at a price significantly less than the tags found on Canon/Nikon products, they have absolutely no chance in hell of being a viable competitor in this field.

I think it secures the future of Konica Minolta. The press release said Sony wanted access to Konica Minolta's anti shake technology amongst other things and KM wanted Sony’s CMOS sensor but the bigger picture (sorry!) is that Konica will benefit from Sony’s marketing ability.

KM’s first offering, the 7D, is a strong product already but with Sony behind them I think the 9D is going to be a really market leading piece of kit.

I bet Canon and Nikon aren’t too excited about the tie up!

Until they add in a built in phone to upload pictures - then it'll be a Sony-Ericsson-Konica-Minolta
