I've been looking at buying a used 2 series but I noticed that 4 series with the same engines can be bought at roughly the same price.

The 2 series is big enough for me so is there any reason for me to look at the 4 series instead eg. handling, refinement, ride quality, equipment etc.

The car won't be a daily driver.

I have a 440i - from what I have read, you’re more likely to get creature comforts / nicer options in the higher model ranges (pano roof, metallic paint, HUD, electric seats, better suspension etc).

It’s the same when I then look at 5 / 8 series with star-lit headliners, glass gear knobs, massage seats etc.

I do understand that the standard dash and trim are nicer in the 4s than the 2s too.

If I only had a need for a 2+2 then I’d go for that - my 4er is a 4 door GC which I bought to replace a Z4 when babies came along :-)

Hope it helps - good luck with the search.

If it’s anything like the M2/M3/M4 question I think you will get more driving pleasure from the smaller car.

However as above you get better options in the 3/4 series such as head up display and upgraded leather etc.

I’m currently in a 640d GC which is a lovely place to be but I miss the size of my F31 330d

The 4 series feels like quite a big car to drive, so I reckon that the 2 series will trump it in that regard. However I think the 4 series feels like a nicer car to sit in though, because of the better options/leather etc that you can get in them as mentioned.

Also from what I read the 4 series is the better car in terms of its chassis/suspension in comparison to the 2 series.

I want from a 440 to an M4 Comp, I tried an M2 but just kept seeing boggo 2 series inside. I'm guessing it will be similar with the 240.

But I bet an M240 is a hoot.

The 4 series will be nicer inside as already mentioned but they’re a big old beast.

I personally don’t mind the 1/2 series interior and preferred it to its peers like the Golf. It obviously falls down when you compare it to a car in the class above.

On big selling point for the 4 series is that you can get the M Performance power and sound kit.

I'm after a coupe.

I've sat in both 2 and 4 series and definitely prefer the 4's interior but I prefer the smaller dimensions of the 2. For this reason I prefer the 2.

From the stats I can see the 4 is very slightly heavier and slightly down on power but I doubt the difference will be noticeable.

If you ask me which is better looking I would say the 4 but I find the 2 more interesting to look at.

I'm now trying to work out what options I should be looking for! 8 speed auto and cruise control are my only real must-haves for me, all the others would be nice-to-haves. I'd love sunset orange!

That was the same kind of reasoning I used, so I bought one. Early days, but it does wafting quite well, and squirting that peachy engine is great, with good chuckability.

My 440i has a lovely engine and gearbox, OEM aero pack to make it look nicer, MPPSK for a map and more noise and family friendly with a huge boot.

However especially during these summer days I still look back at my 2.0 Z4 from 2009 and wish I was still in a smaller 2 seater.

Arguably my current car is more functional and more special but of course a smaller sports car trumps. Z4 has a lesser engine, no sat nav, more primitive inside with manual seats etc but was a hoot.

My brother in law preferred his M235i (manual) to his M4 (dct) for actual driving fun, and having driven both, on a country road I'd agree.

They're fairly similar cars, with the same engine and transmission, so it'll come down to personal preference really.

The 4 is slightly bigger, slightly heavier, probably more refined and with better options.
The 2 is slightly smaller, slightly lighter, slightly more power (10-15bhp), but with a lower quality interior.

I had the same conundrum about a year ago. I knew the car for me was the 2, but I've just never liked the looks of them. I think the 4 is far more graceful and aesthetically pleasing car in the flesh. I find the 2 a bit awkward looking and not like the baby 4 I hoped it would be. Hence I went 440i.

Oh the availability of the MPPSK is a massive plus for the 4 series. That'd make is at least as quick as the 2 and sound much better.

I’m probably going to be shot for this. The 240i reminds me of a hairdresser car. I think it has superseded the Audi TT in that stake. IMHO the 2 did not do well as a replacement for the 3 bar the M2 model. Agree with the comments on the higher up the range you go the more the quality differs. I have a 440i GC and no regrets. It’s not as big as it seems. It’s one of those cars that shrinks around you and you quickly get used to the proportions. It handles and drives better than the 240i in my view. Both are fantastic engines. Drive both and if size matters then go small. The 4 silhouette is timeless though. It still doesn’t look dated to me. The 2 looks long in the tooth.

Yes. I got the MPPSK fitted to my 18 plate 340i 2 weeks ago.
