Linking Visio and Excel

I am trying to develop a network (train not IT type) map on Visio driven by an Excel spreadsheet to change colours etc. on the drawing but my tiny luddite mind is collapsing as ODBC and the like come in to play. Does anyone know of an idiots guide to doing this (ideally on the web as I am a cheapskate).

Any advice very much appreciated.
