Hi all, as ever nothing is simple. I want to buy an android tablet to put in my car to use with a CarPlay adaptor (haven’t decided on wired vs wireless yet). I would also like to hard wire the tablet using a fuse tap.

Thus, it seems I need a powered hub. My thinking is to have the hub powered through the fuse tap, plug the CarPlay adapter into it, and also a DAC to hook up to the aux port. The hub would then be connected to the tablet using a USB C cable.

Doing some research, it seems some tablets do not support this. It is all deeply confusing. Does anyone know of any specific models of tablet that can be charged this way through a powered hub while also using CarPlay (and would there also be enough power to charge my phone if I went wired?)?

Also I would like it to turn on and off with ignition, which I think can be achieved if you have root, so something that can be easily rooted (been a while since I’ve tinkered with anything android!) would be great.

Many thanks.

I don't fully follow what you're trying to do but could you not get a USB-C hub with PD (power delivery) and the necessary outputs you need? You mention a DAC you can certainly get USB-C hubs with 3.5mm audio out or am I missing the point.

CarPlay is Apple only - no android table will run it. iPads can be used with CarPlay

No no you’re not missing the point, that’s exactly it. It’s just that I read (dangerous I know) that using power delivery and OTG (for the CarPlay adaptor) at the same time can be very hit and miss across different tablets. Was just wondering if someone had used this sort of set up and could recommend a tablet that definitely works.

I’m talking about using an adaptor/dongle like this one to make the tablet into a CarPlay display, with CarPlay itself running off my phone. It’s designed for android headunits but they work perfectly well with android tablets too over OTG (subject to the above).

So this isn’t a tablet you’re talking about at all and actually an android headunit that just doesn’t have CarPlay available on it?

If not; and you do indeed mean a separate tablet then that adapter won’t do what you want it to.

OTG doesn't exist any more on devices with USB-C so that info might be outdated and adding unnecessary confusion.
