Basically im considering buying a kit car with the money im earning this summer (its a boring job but moneys alright and I want to put it towards something fun). My budget is about 2-3 grand and im looking for a seven replica style thing (like a robin hood), and Ive got a couple of questions really.

Realistically, will I be able to get insurance; im 19, 1 yrs no claim, and has pass plus.

Also, I spotted this on ebay, but I dont have a clue whether its as much of a bargain as it looks. I dont mind doing a bit of work to finish it off, but how much extra is this going to require, and would I have to put it through SVA?

Insurance won't be too much of a problem if you're prepared to shop around. I insured a 2-litre kit car when I was 19 for around £400 (if memory serves me correctly), although some quotes were over £2000.

Every time since, I've found that one company is much cheaper than all the others, it's just that it's a different company every year. Pick up a copy of Which Kit Car? and phone them all.

The Tiger will need to go through SVA, and find out if a V6 is realistically insurable before you take the plunge.

Good luck,
Adam.

Ive been looking through ebay at work the last couple of days for a 1.6l or a 2l robin hood or something like that, its just when I spotted the tiger, it stood out. This year I think I'd rather not worry about having to put it though a SVA. I plan to build my own kit when I leave uni (I got it all planned!), but until then I want something a little more fun than the golf, which i can then sell again later. Maybe not this summer, as ive left it a little late, but its a definate option for next year when im on my year in industry.

Cheers

That does look like a good deal

Find out if it runs and definitely find out about insurance, don't forget you can easily change the engine if insurance is a problem

The more I think about this, the more into this car im getting. I dont mind doing some work, and in my role as the equipment manager in my motorsports club at uni, I have access to a pit garage, so i could take it down to bath with me. Ive sent the seller a question asking for a no bs assessment of how much time and money this car is going to need. And yeah, like you said I could always change the engine......

(This is what I do at work getting paid to sit around on my bum)

My Marlin Roadster was £580 at 20 and £399 with 3pts (unrelated to the car) & 1yrs NCB. Different car I grant but insurance was a steal considering it's TPFT with unlimited mileage SD&C.

Well the tiger is now out of the question as the seller has withdrawn it from sale, with no explanation, and no reply to my questions. So he might get a bit of negative feedback for that.
The more i think about it, the more I want a kit car, but also the more I realise that I should, realistically, wait until next year when i have more time and money. I'll see.

Why not get a 1.6 sierra in the mean time.

Will get you familiar with the parts and maintenance side and can be used as a donor for most 7 style cars in the budget end of the market?

Have a look at the Striker.

Light nimble 7 style kit car with proven race pedigree. Has been available with IRS or live axle and inboard suspension since it was originally designed unlike some recent manufacturers

You'd struggle to get a Striker for £3k though.

Having said that there is one on Ebay with the reserve set at 3.5k though.

I'd be a bit worried about chassis corrosion looking at the pics, but its hard to tell how bad it is just from that pic and I expect the yellow powder coating makes it look worse than it is. It must be just down the road from me somewhere too, but I'm building one so I don't need another

What does everyone think of this.
Link

Something to be working on for the next little bit (too late in the year to warrant getting a finished one). It looks pretty tidy and the 1.3 would be great as far as insurance goes, and can always be replaced later on. How much do you reckon its worth? Have asked the seller what kit its based on. Quite interested in this one!

Peter

Edited to add the link!

Knew I forgot something!!
How much finishing does it need time and money wise and what kit is it based on?? Sounds pretty good to me!
