As most regulars on here are aware, i am the kiss of death to computers, likewise they in turn like to get their own back.
currently have a HP laptop on its last legs

It powers up ok but ofter about 2 mins just power off

The power input has a red light which comes on when power is put in, after a while it goes white does this have a meNING?

I need some files of the old HD to put on my new laptop. Apart from taking it to currys and getting it put on a USB stick, and spending 45.00 for the honour any thought on how i might jury rig the thing up so at least is runs?

It is (was) a boon as i could look at the works drawings i took pics of at NRM Yorkon it ,and on the new PC draw them in Autocad, without having to swap screen every 2 secs

Red light means charging
White light means battery is fully charged.

Can't you whip the hard drive out and stick it in a caddy / dock?

edit: the laptop's working when plugged in? If so what's the issue?

Best guess is the thermal paste on the CPU has dried up causing the computer to overheat and then go into shutdown.

It's a 5 min job to unscrew the heatsink and clean off the old paste put a few pences worth of thermal paste back on.

I'm thinking it is the power. It is unable to support charging the battery as well as powering the machine. Can you pull the battery and try running it on mains alone?

It'll be the battery which has got itself in an odd state i.e. it thinks it's fully charged so it stops charging then switches off because there's no juice left in the battery.

I had similar with a fairly new battery on my Asus laptop and had to 'fart about' (technical term), by reinstalling the battery device drivers and then putting it through a charge/discharge cycle several times to condition it.

I would go with that theory, I have an old Gateway laptop that we use to map my brothers race car as it has a proper serial port. After not using it for years, I plugged it in and it had exactly the same symptoms as your laptop, it would power on for a minute or two then just switch itself off.

I suspected it might be the battery, so I removed it and the laptop stayed on with no issues at all.

I've got an old HP laptop that only works with the battery removed and plugged into the mains. As it's so easy to try, it would be the first thing I'd check.

Same thing happen to me with a battery that I bought off Ebay that lasted only 6 months. I then bought a BYDT battery from Amazon for my 7 year old HP laptop and it's just like the original HP battery (lasting about 2 hrs after a charge).

God and PH good guys work in mysterious ways

Following Bristol thoughts i dismantled the laptop to check and at the same had to remove the battery, plugged power back in and working OK, then read the updated forum replies and several suggested that the battery is the problem. As the thing is running ok i would tend to agree
Just need to rectify the dreaded 0x80070750 error and hopefull all OK

Thanks a million to all who took the time to throw in suggestions, Should any of you get stuck with a milling machine or Myford Lathe i will return the compliment

Thanks again
