Not long ago he was being touted by some as a future PM - a safe pair of hands.

Reports emerging that he was asked by civil servants to personally make a call to his Afghan opposite number which he delegated to a junior minister and it seems it never happened.

Lazy? Ill-informed? Poor judgement? Or is it just going to be another "meh" moment?

So it's the junior minister at fault, as the job was delegated to them. Bit of a non story really

Dominic Raab was advised to make the call personally. He chose not to.

Sky News said:
A phone call that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab was advised to make to Afghanistan's foreign minister but which was delegated to a junior minister did not take place, it has emerged.

Mr Raab was reportedly "unavailable" when officials in his department suggested he "urgently" contact Hanif Atmar on 13 August to arrange for help to airlift translators out of Afghanistan - two days before the Taliban marched on Kabul.

The responsibility of arranging the call with the Afghan foreign ministry was then handed to a junior minister.

Exactly this.

Plus, what is the expected outcome of the call?

Oh right you are then Mr Raab - Our army is ready smite the Taliban back into their caves. And yes - we will keep that airport open so you all Brits can leave safely.

Would have just been symbolic and made no difference. We could have said “the foreign Secretary was engaged in trying to resolve the situation” meanwhile on the ground Jack st would have changed.

Politics really needs to get over this childish screaming for people to resign over the slightest thing. They wonder why people are not engaged and then go and act like spoilt brat children all the time.

20 years and a $trillion all for nothing because Raab didn’t put in a call!

UK politics and media are the pits.

Indeed, one has to wonder what Lord Goldsmith was doing, was he on holiday as well, it seems many in senior roles were. (Officials at the Foreign Office, the Home Office and the Ministry of Defence)

Yep smile

He was on holiday with his two children on the 13th August I believe. Just the UK media usual summer time game of trying to break up Minister's holidays. See poor old Javid dragged off holiday a couple of years back for migrant boats, as if he had any power to stop it.

Imagine UK in 1940 with all the airports/ports besieged as people tried to run away to the USA . . . . . . .

As a country we stood and fought, Afghanistan hasn't.

The rest is just noise.

Hilarious.
We tried, in imperial times.
Russia tried in their strongest times.
The grand old US of A tried.
The conquest of Afghanistan has not been apparent, yet you think they can't fight.
Really?

There are enough threads on the military side of what's going on in Afghanistan.

To me it's pretty simple.

In the middle of the biggest foreign policy crisis in recent years the Foreign Secretary felt his time was best spent on a beach in Crete.

The Prime Minister also had to be dragged back off holiday apparently.

Troops at an airport risking their lives to try to save people left who've risked theirs and those of their families to help us.

For Raab and Johnson's part in this it's lions led by donkeys.

He should have rushed back and saved the day? If he was here we wouldn't have needed troops at the airport?

I didn't realise so much hinged on one man. Let's hope he doesn't resign as the country may collapse!

He should never have gone on holiday in the first place

If its not within his remit/ abilities to help why come back at all- why not make a statement saying nothing he can do but the Military are doing their best?

I laughed at the radio this morning when I heard this man's job is at such risk over making one phone call.

Media baying for blood again to keep the clicks coming.....

Of course not.....all civil servants should remain chained to their desks 24/7 and fed intravenously.

No politician should ever be allowed a holiday, particularly to fancy foreign parts.
