Speedo and the law

Had a problem with the speedo sticking at 29999 which I know is a common problem, but thankfully it sorted itself out.
When I thought it was a problem I was told that Smiths will repair it, but it takes a few weeks and I was told you can't drive without a speedo.
My question is, is it illegal to do this or just inadvisable. If it is illegal how would using a Roadangel instead be looked upon?
Anyone know? are there there any boys in blue out there?
Would like to know in case it happens again. (would be a good opportunity to get the trip meter fixed as well which I can't reset)

It is a requirement under Construction and Use regulations to have a speedo, but any accurate means of measuring the vehicle's speed is acceptable - a lot of the kit car boys use digital cycle speedos - so your road angel should be fine.
