Anyone know if the loco was real (as in, original)..?

An article elsewhere refers to it as a "purpose built train", so I suspect it's a fabricated rolling shell with some kind of smoke machine installed.

Apparently it’s a mock up based on a diesel. So fear not no steam locos were damaged in this stunt.

Slightly surprised that they actually did it rather than use CGI - would that not have ben much cheaper?

CGI would almost certainly be cheaper - but, apparently, doing actual physical effects does produce a more satisfying/realistic result

Live action can quiet often be cheaper than CGI. Also it's Tom Cruise - he's always keen to do his own stunts.

A bit of piste: 1929 The Wrecker.
This was filmed not far from me ( before my time of course).
The driver was doing about 30mph before jumping off & all the camera hides were the hayricks.

That looks like a dressed-up BR Standard locomotive of some kind. The forthcoming Indiana Jones movie similarly features a BR Standard, a 9F in that case disguised (slightly) to look like some kind of nazi engine. There are plenty of real German ‘Kriegsloks’ around though, I’d have thought they’d prefer the real thing.

The train wreck from the film The Fugitive is still where it was, I've seen videos of on you tube of people exploring it.

He used to be a diesel, who's a pretty good diesel but has some bad luck. This is turn leads to a crisis of confidence but all is resolved when the love of Tom Cruise helps him to turn things around.

They did stunt scenes at the north York moors railway with a couple of coaches behind, it was pushed along by a class 66 diesel. Looks very convincing though in photos where it’s on a lorry trailer.

The "Locomotive" was specially built with a Scania diesel engine in the tender for propulsion and three steam generators for effects. It was run -in on the GCR then went over to Norway for some filming. More filming was done back in the UK on the North York Moors Railway. Then it plunged into the quarry on a specially built length of line in Derbyshire.

Was the location scout an alumni of 1970s/80s Dr Who? hehe

Pppffft - 007 would have made the jump. - and probably added a “man with the golden gun” corkscrew twist in for good measure

Amusing that an individual movie can afford the time and money to lay a length of track as a one-off for a single stunt, while even the smallest piece of work done "for real" takes forever and costs a fortune.

Here are a couple of pics taken when it was on the GCR in Sept 2020.

We were at the NYMR in the spring. There was loads of film preparation going on (tents, lights, catering etc.). There was also a low military rail wagon with an integrated cannon and German writing on it, so presumably pretending to be part of a Nazi train.
