A bit of piste: 1929 The Wrecker.
This was filmed not far from me ( before my time of course).
The driver was doing about 30mph before jumping off & all the camera hides were the hayricks.

That looks like a dressed-up BR Standard locomotive of some kind. The forthcoming Indiana Jones movie similarly features a BR Standard, a 9F in that case disguised (slightly) to look like some kind of nazi engine. There are plenty of real German ‘Kriegsloks’ around though, I’d have thought they’d prefer the real thing.

Apparently it’s a mock up based on a diesel. So fear not no steam locos were damaged in this stunt.
He used to be a diesel, who's a pretty good diesel but has some bad luck. This is turn leads to a crisis of confidence but all is resolved when the love of Tom Cruise helps him to turn things around. The "Locomotive" was specially built with a Scania diesel engine in the tender for propulsion and three steam generators for effects. It was run -in on the GCR then went over to Norway for some filming. More filming was done back in the UK on the North York Moors Railway. Then it plunged into the quarry on a specially built length of line in Derbyshire.

Was the location scout an alumni of 1970s/80s Dr Who?

Amusing that an individual movie can afford the time and money to lay a length of track as a one-off for a single stunt, while even the smallest piece of work done "for real" takes forever and costs a fortune. Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
