Hi Guys,

Just purchased an approved used 5 series G30 from BMW main dealer last week and after a week I am getting this problem . Does anyone know what may be causing it? It started after I took a wrong turn once and the system kept crashing.

When the 250 yards counter bar comes, the system crashes. The counter still works as
it counts down as I am driving. once the junction is passed and as long as the next junction is more than 250 yards away, it shows the rev counter and navigation direction correctly, however, once again when you reach the 250 yards, it crashes.

I still have 1 year warranty left so I am thinking of contacting my local BMW so they can check whether this is a hardware issue or a software and resolve this.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Pics below

My local one BMW Barons Ruislip is closed until Monday but they are a service centre only. I have never been to one of these. Can I walk in and talk to a service manager or do I need to ring in advance?

I purchased from a BMW Barons dealer about an hour away but hopefully won't have to go all the way there!

I used then when they were known as Scothall and the service was poor, I got my car back in worse condition than it went in.

I would recommend Sytner High Wycombe, they were quite helpful.

Ouch...

High Wycombe branch is abit too far for me. Other branches are Park Royal (Service only), Berry Chiswick and Berry Heathrow

I assume Service only means, they will deal with my issue but just that they don't sell cars to retail? Is this understanding correct

Yes, exactly the same, but site is less flashy and don't sell cars.

I've used Berry Heathrow, but that was too long ago... Probs hitting 15yrs ago. They were OK back then.

Popped into ruislip branch today. earliest date they could give me with loan car was late September (a day after my 3 year warranty ends but I have extended warranty). loan car cost £25 for insurance (wack). they said no need for end of warranty check...!

Went to berry chiswick after this, spoke with the manager who also said earliest they could do was end of September with loan car (no mention of any cost). they did say it was best to do the end of warranty check as it would mean they have full record on system.

Spoke with online chat person from the dealer I purchased the car at to see if they can help as car is less than 10 days old and causing this issue and to see if they can book it in earlier to check the navigation issue before 3 year warranty ends next month and also carry out end of warranty check at same time. the live chat person said they'll get someone from servicing team to ring me to discuss. waiting for call atm... wonder if it'll come smile

That's very odd. Can you hold the volume buttton in for 30 secs and see if that helps next time it happens?
Are there any map updates you can try and apply, if not, that sounds like a reprogram/reflash at main dealer.

I assume the 30 secs hold resets the infotainment system of the car? Does it wipe the service records also or it stays there?

I drove nearly 80 miles yesterday to a completely unknown destination and purposely taking wrong turns to see how the system coped but it didn't give any trouble at all.

I have booked appointment with barons ruislip but it is end of september due to loan car. i am putting the navigation on every time i go out just random destination to see what may be causing it to crash, but its been 1.5 days without crash now.

Not sure if I will be hearing from the Barons I purchased the car from but if I don't hear from them until tomorrow then I may just drop the car off to Ruislip without a loan car and tell them to do the end of warranty check along with this issue next week otherwise.

No, the 30 second thing will just reboot the idrive system, not entirely sure that would fix your particular issue though.

These cars can get very confused if the battery gets too low. I wonder if it got flat before you bought it or it has had a new battery recently. A few drives later and hopefully it's sorted.

Definitely get a second opinion while it’s under warranty though!

I didn't bother with any resets.

I cancelled my original appointment with loan car for late September and booked my car in for end of next week to carry out end of warranty check along with the navigation issue.

The person I spoke to on the phone said they need the car for two days. Hopefully they can find and resolve anything that is causing issue and at the same time check the car is tip top!

Does the BMW pay them for end of warranty check? If yes, what is in it for the BMW? Aren't they just losing money? I am confused

Looks to be covered here

https://www.stratstone.com/bmw/servicing/end-of-wa...

Presumably they are getting some form of flat fee per check from BMW, however it is getting the service department work if issues are found which will be paid by the warranty. Potential for up sell from the video health check I’d guess as a “oh by the way, whilst we were checking we found…”

I will be pissed if they try to charge me for anything. Car will be 17 days old from when I purchased during check. Still under 3 year warranty and AUC warranty until August 2022. Next servicing in September 2022 and brake fluid in January 2023. Tyres tread were 4mm. Mileage will be around 12.5k when I give them so if brake pads or any elements needs changing then they’ll be doing it themselves as my argument will be it was faulty from start if it needs changing now at this mileage.

Cant see anything where they can catch me out to be honest. Not saying they may not try though like you said.

my car went in for end of warranty check last week and also the navigation issue.

they sent me a brief video of the inspection - everything was OK beside the rear tyres tread being around 4mm which they said usually to be changed at 3 as it is rear wheel drive.

in regards to navigation they said they found a software bug and have updated/upgraded the software and shouldn't cause any issue (which it hasn't for last 3 days).

took approximately 5 hours. got car back the same day.
