Just received a countryman S R60 ,11 Plate , with 70k miles , i done the order online without physical check(big mistake) , cause it was far .

The car after 2 miles driving is got Engine Light , hesitation almost stall , and what i observed white smoke from the right exhaust .

Problem for me looks significant, from my experience it can be blown head gasket or even burning coolant leaking into the cylinders .

Dealer offered for fix , but i didn't accept, i persist for full refund and return the car back.

Any opinion ?

Did you collect or have it delivered? You will be covered under the 14 day distance selling regulations but you will need to return the vehicle to the dealership. Did you pay by cash or was it financed via the dealer?

delivered to me , i paid half ,bank xfer and half finance , this is not a problem i got 14 days cooling period to cancel the finance .

i cant drive it back , the car is got EML , and the engine cant respond more than 3000 rpm , like stalling .

well he will pick it up , i got 6 months warranty and he is a big dealer Mercedes/used .

but i don't think is a good idea to keep and fix this thing under warranty ,i'll have further issues later .

Yes get a full refund, the dealer would surely have known there was an issue with it. The Consumer Rights Act is your friend but a main dealer will probably have a 30 day refund policy anyway and as stated there's the Distance Selling regulations as well.

I would hazard a guess at timing chain.

is been changed mate , i checked the service history , and i found the receipt is been done .

The thing is ,i sold my awesome golf R , to do some savings for home deposit , was looking something cheap but a bit fast , and now I'm with a 3 cylinder 1L.T Peugeot 107 .

i ordered the last month two cars , distance sale , one Peugeot 208 Gti / Failed before delivery don't know the problem , and now the countryman S which is also failed after delivery .

But the next one , i will go for normal physical check and test drive , as i done at my previous golf and it was awesome used car .

No you won’t be able to drive it. You’ll either need to have them pick it up or you’ll have to arrange for it to be delivered back to them.

I asked re the finance as sometimes they can help if the dealer isn’t allowing you to excise your rights.

If you’re not happy with the car and the confidence is gone then I totally understand why you would want to return it.

The fact it’s had the timing chain replaced doesn’t sound great. Any reason for that? As technically they shouldn’t need to be. Timing belts yes, timing chains no although they should always be checked during a service to ensure there is no slack and rattle. It’s not something you’d usually just change.

Well, i think this n18/14 engine is got some history with timing chain issues , but despite this defect has be done before, which is not related to the current problem , they told me before the order ,our experienced mechanics checked our used cars 120 points or something .. and they sent me a defective car . Breakdown the same day of delivery .

i don't know i had changed a lot of performance and non perf cars in my life ,never seen this before . I'm sure that car never been checked properly ,and just they wanted to get rid of .
But its not fair , to get and pay a new car even used and have it sitting outside of the garage with an engine fault first day of delivery .

N18 and n14 are worlds apart when it comes to reliability, the chain is not really an issue on the n18. Why don’t you get the codes read and see what comes up, most likely a cam sensor. If you want trouble free motoring buy brand new

Well i know and I'm not a fan of these engines and mini's , always i was with group VAG/Tfsi, Audi s3-8p-8v f/L and Golf R 7/7.5, all they were all used around 2-4 years old .and never ever had problems even remapped .

But I'm trying to reduce the monthly cost for my car to buy a home, and after I'll go back to my favourite category and car MK8 Golf R.

If i go for a brand new mini ,for these money . be sure will be an other car at the end .

i was thinking to get a used countryman s for a couple of years ,and then sell it .

Yeah exactly the chain isn’t the issue here and if it’s a 2011 it would be the N18 engine, unless it’s been a 2010 car registered in 2011. Could be something so simple or something a lot more serious and without it being checked you won’t know.

Faults develop and there is no guarantee on any car, new or used that they will be without any issues. Whilst you expect a car you’ve just bought to have been checked and mechanically sound, it’s only confirmed as that at the time. Who’s to say this wouldn’t have happened next week or a months time? Unless the codes show it’s been happening on a more regular basis then it would seem it’s just unlucky.

I understand it’s not a great buying experience but it wasn’t delivered like that, it’s just happened to appear after you’ve driven it but you do have rights and it’s now up to you to stand firm and get the right outcome for you.

Yes it is 2011 , The car is got problem ,and i think this problem was there before the previous owner part exchange , that's why she exchanged the car , cause the cost of leaking valves or piston rings repair is high enough to keep it and fix it .

But the car dealer if he want to be professional and keep customers , needs to examine and test the car additionally to void any problems like this , that's why we pay something more to buy from a dealer and not from a private seller.

High pressure fuel pump could also be an issue on these.

White smoke could just be condensation.

If the car is not right reject it

If you don't want to let the dealer fix it, then by all means reject it but maybe find out what the fault is.

If you want something with sensible running costs & a decent amount of go then the Focus in Titanium X 180 spec with it's good handling & nice spec will be a good sensible option:

Tour putting 2 and 2 together and getting 27, head gaskets, turbos, rings are not normally an issue on the later n18 engine, thermostat housings, vanos, cam sensors, clutches and hpfp yes - personally I’d get the code read (if you have breakdown cover give them a call) and see what comes up. I wouldn’t worry about smoke yet, it’s most likely condensation, oh and I’d take my chances with a mini over the rubbish vw group produce.

If you want to stay with VAG the 2013 Leon FR starts at around 7k for a decent one. The 1.4tsi is quick enough and probably more fun to drive than a countryman.
