Hi!

I'm heading off to do the NC500 in just under 2 weeks, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions of places to stop off for food or drink. We've sorted most of the trip to and from Inverness but any recommendations for places on the route would be appreciated. Night one is Dornoch, the second is in Tongue on the North Coast, the third is Ullapool and finally back to inverness for the fourth night.

Also, any distilleries we should be stopping off at?

Many thanks,

Steve

If you like seafood, both of these places are excellent, be prepared to queue at Ulllapool.

Clynelish just opened a new visitors centre, it's excellent.

Can't tell you anything about Tongue, it closes for lunch.... but The Store Cafe in Bettyhill is a friendly place to stop for lunch if it suits your itinerary.

There are plenty of eateries in Ullapool, the Seafood Shack had an outrageous queue when we went a couple of weeks ago. The Seaforth did a good job and was a pleasant place to sit outside enjoying nice food and a pint whilst watching the crowd queue for takeaways.

you might be OK as most schools will be back at that point, but we found most places to be fully booked in the popular tourist areas. As NC500 is one big tourist hotspot, you may struggle. We knew what we were getting ourselves in for though.

I haven't been up since it became so widely-publicised, but I keep seeing a lot of negative coverage nowadays. Is it as bad as portrayed?

What sort of negative coverage are you thinking of? Smoo Cave and the road from Durness to Tongue was very, very busy when we were up, as was Ullapool, but it was the first week in August. Apart from Tongue being closed at 1:30 in the afternoon I have no criticism.

Hopefully some semblance of normality will have returned by next March when we'll be in Ullapool.

On some breakfast news programme this morning was a story of one pub who refused to serve him so he went back 3 days in a row to talk about Brexit. They finally served him on the 4th day, presumably so he wouldn't come back on the 5th!
