Help identifying a location - Rome?

I was watching a 90s documentary on Youtube the other day about Gladiators (by the much-missed Terry Jones). One history expert they kept flipping to was standing in front of the most intriguing backdrop; it looked like one of those Renaissance paintings of ruins with nature taking over.



It must be somewhere in Rome and famous, but I've only visited one day on a cruise! Google images is no help either on a screen crop. Is it familiar to anyone?

It's the water that has thrown me, is that a lake or a puddle? It looks like a lake but I can't think of anywhere like that.

The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco, California is a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art. Completely rebuilt from 1964 to 1974,[1] it is the only structure from the Exposition that survives on site.[3]

It looks like a tasteless Disney-esque pastiche of what an ancient ruin ought to look like. The sort of fanciful tat that Canaletto would paint and flog to Brit aristocracy doing their Grand Tour bit, etc.

The location being in America makes perfect sense.

Thank you all! We spent a couple of days in San Francisco and missed it completely. I now recognise it as where Sean Connery met his daughter in "The Rock"!

Re: ruins and pastiches etc, its all a just bit of fun, and about as genuinely relevant as the dinosaurs. I love a bit of fantasy art about lost lost civilsiations, whether digital or done by someone with brush and a long beard!
