Sorry but a small rant coming -

Given all we’ve recently been through why is it some people aren’t happy unless their unhappy , if that makes sense.

I’m talking about the usual miserable to55ers at work that sit waiting to bite someone’s head off .

Classic this morning was “ I’m going to grumpy today as my train was cancelled” !

What about the people that have lost relatives and friends over the pandemic and have real struggles in life .

Have found myself very recently becoming quite hateful of these people .

Makes my blood boil

End of rant………and breath .

I think the world takes all sorts to go round. We had a woman at work that had a permanent snarl on her face, nothing was ever good news always bad

We had a buy out at work once, everyone got a payout. I was the most junior member at got around 20k, she’d been there for a long time so I’m guessing 75 - 100k

All she did was moan about the tax, how it wasn’t enough blah blah

She ultimately met her demise because she was just a pain in the arse to deal with and dragged you down

Of course, some people have horrific home lives, health , financial worries etc

Unless you know everything that goes on in other people lives, then you cant judge whether they are grumpy or have genuine bigger problems that may be giving them concern.
I get that some people will always have their glass half empty and can be negative, I work with enough of them laugh

Thing is the guy who missed his train may have already woken up in debilitating pain from injury / medical condition, spilled his coffee down his shirt, tripped over the doorstep on his way out after being bked from his wife who he knows is secretly banging the postman. That missed train may just be the edge that tips him over into bringing an Amalite AR-10 carbine gas powered semi automatic weapon into the office and pumping round after round into colleagues and co-workers. This might be someone you've known for years. someone very, very close to you.;)

I wish all that was true ( apart from the gun but obviously) but he lives alone so gets to do whatever he wants, has no medical issues , his mother has just been given the all clear from cancer aged 83 and has money.

We all sit in silence until his mood lightens…….very sad

My mum is extremely pessimistic,

every now and then i feel myself slipping into her mindset and just stop myself

very hard though and her outlook is crippling her but shes too set in her ways to see it,

every wrong thats been done to her gets mentioned every day

stuff going back 50 years gets brought up, silly minor stuff, like broken family slide projectors,
someone borrowed and broke it,

then a few years later i bought a new one and it solved the problem,

it stopped the constant moaning about it,

then she threw it out,

My family and extended family as a whole are fairly miserable people. Always comparing themselves to others, benchmarking their happiness in life based on material possessions and finances rather than a loving family and health. Nothing is ever enough - someone earns more, lives in a bigger house, has a new car.

I think it stems from rather stoic Northern Grandparents - you got a job at 14-16 and stuck with it. It didn't matter what it was, whether it made you happy or it was the most depressing existence, a wage was everything. You never went above your station, you lived local, kept your aspirations in check and got on with it.

It rubs off on you growing up. Thankfully mine and subsequent generations appear to be a little bit better, some more than others. I get more content with age, as I suspect many of us do.

Some people just love bad news, gossip, complaining, tragedy, etc.

My Mum is a bit like that. Her life revolves around being on the phone to friends, or meeting friends for a coffee, where they all complain bitterly about what tragedy has befallen the family this week. Lot's of 'scandal' and 'he said she said' etc

In reality they are all well off middle class families, and the scandal/disaster is usually something like someones son/daughter being in a relationship with someone they don't fully approve of.

My Mum rarely discusses anything good or positive. Everything is always a disaster or something that displeases her greatly. She behaves like she has been dealt a really bad hand, but the reality is that life is generally good.

The worst bit is that you subconsciously try to avoid people like Mum. I love her to bits, but she is depressing and frustrating, and as a consequence I see her less than I would like, as everything is always a complaint.

Even now that I'm aged 41 she is still trying to tell me where I'm going wrong in life and what she disapproves of...

Lots of people dealing with stuff and battles that may not be apparent too. Life is a mixed bag for all sorts of reasons at times.

Yep.

Mum could be so positive and upbeat given her enviable lifestyle and situation, but she chooses to wallow in the minor 'bad' stuff, that frankly isn't even vaguely bad by most peoples standards.

My Dad is generally positive but even he gets dragged down by her at times.

Me and my wife try to focus on the good stuff in life, enjoy things, and try to quickly move past anything negative or just laugh about it.

Unless you've had depression or anxiety you have no idea how the mildest thing can set you off. Just because he lives alone and his mum hasn't died doesn't mean his life is perfect.

Maybe cut the guy some slack, or ask him if he's ok?

I know what you mean, I try and keep my social circles as likeminded as possible to avoid having the energy drained from me with negativity.

Of course I'm sure there are lots that do fit the "only happy when it rains" scenario, but many just have a lot on their plate. I personally try and balance out the misery with some positivity. I say "try" because its hard work.
