The RS has been OPC serviced/warranted since new but i was wondering where other .2RS owners take their cars to be looked after?

The 7.2 isn't particularly specialised or complex a car tbh so personally would be happy (and have used) a couple of different indy's to sort various things on the rs and would p trust any of them to do a probably better job than any OPC these days.

IME, when you talk to people running these things, whilst OPC is good, the indies, nowadays, will often have more experience with these cars and certainly of the ones that are used properly. Lots of stuff needs checking/doing that really is not on the radar of the OEM servicing schedule.

I'd say:
  • RPM
  • Fearnsport
  • Sports & Classic (if you want to head north rather than south)

most indies will be fine as it's a pretty straight forward car -- but RPM, Fearnsport, Paragon and Parr Motorsport are all renowned GT3 gurus.

Another vote for RPM Technik - they take great care of my 997.2 GT3 (non RS but substantially similar requirements...)

I have always used JZM and Tech 9.. more knowledgeable than OPC mechanics.

Maintained an OPC history for 10 years before entrusting my 997.2 GT3 to Matt at Fearnsport. Superb knowledge and first-class service.

I don't run a warranty on the car anymore. touch wood but the car has been very reliable bar the usual ignition barrel and exhaust muffler splitting issues which was fixed under warranty.

I don't track the car so it doesn't get the wear and tear it's built to be subjected to.

So doesn't really matter to me if the specialists are better if the OPC can do a decent enough job and I get to maintain a decent relationship with them as well as full Porsche maintenance history

For cars not tracked, I'd certainly agree my inclination might be more toward OPC.

The problem is, especially when tracked, whilst very tough, reliable machines, time has shown there are a few issues which need non-OEM solution. Prime example here is the coolant hose issue: https://www.sharkwerks.com/tech-articles/the-gt1-c...

Yeah so that’s the position that I’m in, the car isn’t tracked.
In fact lately it’s not even driven…. I think this years mileage has been to and from the OPC for its MOT…

Thanks for the recommendations.. One to think about.

Another vote for JZM - basically at Porsche and Manthey accredited level with all the diagnostics and knowledge etc - plus service team bring their own game as well. bow

Are the renown specialists above any cheaper than opc? I think gone are the days that they are. Think they are at least perceived to be more expert than opc and can command the same prices or thereabouts.

They will also recommend fixes that may not be Porsche approved or parts which they find better suited. On the whole, I think they are better but if you intend to keep the car original then opc is no worse IMO

I find some things difficult to choose. Eg welding or pinning coolant lines. Opc doesn’t do this.
Or changing the clutch/ flywheel to rs4.0 from our rs3.8

Think will need a specialist for those changes even if they make a ton of sense. And you should do the lot together.

IME the local OPC service costs have been very reasonable, especially considering their not insignificant overheads. I also felt they did a good job.

That’s not why I use an indie.

Car now sold but, 997.2 GT3. 45k miles. Bi annual service and 2 year warranty at OPC. Local garage for MoT. Upgrade to 4.0L clutch, LWFW and cup diff by RPM. This seemed a reasonable balance. Interestingly when it came to an OPC 2 year service and warranty renewal they either didn’t notice or made no comment on the chatter from the LWFW/4.0L clutch combo

OPC warranty check is very good at checking for obvious branding of (mostly pointless) OEM stuff like battery or brakes but definitely not for anything internal or requiring extra effort to be sure before telling you X part needed to be replaced OE to get warrantied....
