M140i running costs
Discussion
I'm doing some basic maths to try and get an approximation of what an M140i would realistically cost to own. I am looking to change my car (bad timing, but I'm unconvinced used prices are changing any time soon).
I'm likely to get a 68/19 plate car used from BMW.
My understanding is that it will still be on its original warranty for a short period. Is the 1yr BMW Used warranty on top of that (so only starts after the original expires)?
A 3yr service plan with BMW is £720, but perhaps this isn't the best/most cost effect way.
I will keep the car a max of 8yrs and do low miles (7-8k/yr).
My terrible maths give something like this:
- Purchase: £26,000
- Servicing/misc: £300/yr
For 8yrs this is ~£300/month (trade-in value could make this more like £200/month).
I'm ignoring insurance/tires/tax/etc...
Is there anything obvious I should take into account with my awful maths? I'm partially looking to give me a reason to do this and prove to myself that it's not a crazy idea. It would be a cash purchase (maybe a cheap bank loan to help).

Can't help with the maths but looking at Auto Trader at any car over 300bhp and there's hundreds of them. Should be good opportunity to get a deal but very spec dependent. Lots were cheap PCP deals which were being posted on BabyBMW at the time so not all have a good spec. For me, Pro Nav and the better audio would be a must. Lots say the suspension upgrade is good too. I've driven one but the steering put me off. Fast though.

Yeah I'm fairly clear on spec I want. Pro nav is a must.Right now my list is either a 140i, or a 330d Touring. One is more accepting of my near 40 age, the other more trying to hold onto some fun! The 330D option is extremely expensive right now though, and probably more likely to take a bigger depreciation hit than a 140i.
Servicing is every 2 years or 19k miles. Around town expect 25mpg and 40mpg on a run. I wouldn't be buying now though as prices are highly inflated, the same cars that were £20k are now £4-5k more from BMW AUC.
The warranty on a approved used is maximum of 12 months if outside manufacturers, so if it has 10 months manufacturers warranty left AUC will top it up 2 months.
Only thing I'd want if I bought another would be shadow edition as a minimum and make sure it has the rock guards on the front radiator.

Almost all cars are 20% up. There doesn’t seem to be much that would suggest that will change for 12-18 months. That’s all covered elsewhere though.
330D Tourings seem to have gone up more than M140i’s from BMW Used. They’re hard to find for sub £28k now and I can’t imagine they will hold value as well as a 140i.

Mine was pretty cheap to run.
Fuel east too bad, I averaged 28.2 over two years according to the trip computer. Fuel usage was very Jekyll and Hyde; on a run it could be pretty frugal but drive it hard and it soon vanishes. The fuel tank is annoyingly small too.
Tyres are pretty cheap. I stuck with the Pilot Super Sports with were around £140 each off the top of my head.
Insurance was the killer for me and it seemed to go up each year. It’s not just me either, plenty on BabyBMW faced similar. I guess the knobheads that they attract are starting to impact on premiums.
You might get lucky and buy a car with a service pack; mine had the old three years or 36k service pack was was £299….or less than I was quoted for the first service. The second one is a bit chunkier, but at a certain point the value line service kicks on which will save some cash. The dealer servicing is worth hanging onto given the oil filter issues that the B58 suffers from. If the worst happens, you’ll get sone goodwill hopefully from BMW.
I agree with the poster above about values at the moment. I got shot of mine for £4,500 less than I paid for it after two years and 23k. I’d also be slight art of used ones given the number that were cheap on PCP abs had a JB4 stuck on ad driven by idiots.

One point that definitely holds me back on a BMW is CarPlay. From my visit to BMW they tell me that even with Pro Nav they cannot activate CarPlay. It comes from factory with it on some cars, but not others, and they can’t do a software change. It’s really odd. Apparently if I get another company to add it that invalidates the entire car warranty.
Has anyone gone through this? It seems incredibly dumb for a 2-3yr old car to have this issue.

Had a m135i for nearly 6 years.
Purchased it 1 year old for £22,000 ran it for 40,000 miles. It had one set of tyres, MPSS all round from memory around £650. Front pads and disks (at BMW) £1,200. Other than this just servicing and MOT's. Didn't have a single problem or bill.
Ave mpg in my time was 34.9mpg, easily did 45mpg on a run and 20-25mpg around town.
P/Xed for £12,500. One of the cheapest, really nice, cars I've owned in a £ per mile.

Iv only had mine a few months so can’t really comment to much on long term running costs although replacement parts Iv looked at, tyres, brakes etc don’t seem to expensive.
Fuel has been from 9mpg on track into the 40’s on long motorway drive in eco mode which would give 450 miles to a tank or so.
I think it’s a brilliant drive though probably my favourite car Iv owned, seems ridiculously quick ( for a 1 series) so much so I thought it had been mapped so stuck it on a dyno and nope it’s standard!
Suspension does let it down a little on bumpy roads when on it, mines the standard suspension, the rear starts to get a bit out of shape fairly quickly but Iv got some Bilsteins on the way so hopefully they will sort it out.
Great fun little car though, even the mrs approves..

Ps, I will add thought that it’s a small car, rear seat room and boot being much smaller than I first thought when I actually come to filling them for a week away etc or getting a mate in the back.

Yep - needs Car Play preparation specified as a factory option as far as I understand - and then you'd still have to pay for access to the app. Android Auto was never an option on F series cars. Has anyone gone through this? It seems incredibly dumb for a 2-3yr old car to have this issue.
My F31 doesn't have this - I've looked at various aftermarket plug in modules, but something like the Bimmer Tech unit with technical support is £400+. Definitely something I've missed from my previous Peugeot. BMW nav is pretty useless for traffic/roadworks.
I know Mazda now offer a dealer fit upgrade to install CarPlay/AA functionality but I doubt there's much hope of BMW doing similar!

I have a 240i so broadly the same car. I've had mine about 12 months now and I still absolutely love it. I don't think fuel costs are particularly bad for what it is, probably average low to mid 20's around city driving.
Mine has just over 37k on the clock now and I have just taken the extended BMW warranty out, the 12 month extension came in at £450 for a year or I was offered £55 a month for an ongoing warranty for as long as I want to keep a warranty, that's the fully comprehensive warranty with £100 excess so cheaper options are available.
I have gone for the monthly option as it locks in the cost for the next 2-3 years I plan to keep the car.
As an aside mine is saying it's due a service in October but when I look at the service indicators through I-Drive they all say 2022, can anyone advise what the service in October will be? is it a basic inspection? I'm tempted to get an oil change anyway even though it's not due.

Slightly well timed post but I have actually just traded in my F31 330d xdrive for an M140i...
As a do it all family bus, the 330d was phenomenal at being a tool. It was quiet, comfortable (adaptive suspension), reasonable on fuel, quick off the mark, and the standard speakers were honestly perfectly acceptable. Mine had the adaptive cruise and aside from certain times (single lane A roads specifically) it was a nuisance as it was never predictable when it would start slowing down on a motorway when catching traffic.
The handling was also really frustrating, being xdrive it sat higher up and honestly handled like a boat, especially when putting my foot down it would lift at the front (or so it felt like) so never really inspired confidence.
I got about 450-500 miles out of a tank, regardless of how it was driven. Best I ever saw was a long run down from Inverness where the OBC said 53mpg and the tank to tank maths worked out at 46mpg iirc. RFL was £170 but as mine was over £40k new I got the £320 extra so was £490 a year RFL, insurance was ~£500 per year and I think my long term average was around 40mpg.
The M140i is totally different. Only had it a few days but its the first car I have had in years which I want to take out for a drive. I am a little biased as I am still in the honeymoon period and I have wanted an M135/m140i since they were first released years back.
Mine is the shadow edition (not sure if that adds anything) with pro nav, apple play, HK speakers, zf8 auto, cruise, heated seats etc.
Its not as comfortable as the 330d was, its got a few more creaks (its 5 door so I suspect its door rubbers) and the fuel economy is obviously a bit worse (man maths, petrol is 5ppl cheaper than diesel round here).
Performance is obviously a lot different, the 330d is quick upto 70, the M140i is on another level when joining a bypass/motorway. Noise is obviously a lot better as well, and even though the 330d was on nearly double the miles, the gear changes in comfort on the 140i are faster than the F31 was in sport.
RFL is £155 a year (which is crazy when its a 335bhp car), I have only had it a few days so can't give a long term but just driving around I am seeing 32mpg at the moment.
Apologies if that comes across as nonsensical blathering. If you have any specific questions I would be happy to try and offer my opinion from experience of the two, I did around 8k miles in the 330d including 1k around the highlands...

Went to a chap locally to me who installed the Wi-fi aerial, obtained the relevant FSC code and then coded it in. As soon as the cars data subscription expired, I wished that I ticked that option when I ordered the the car.

I hated the xdrive suspension in the cars I tested; it’s so soft. It really takes away a lot it confidence in the car. As a do it all family bus, the 330d was phenomenal at being a tool. Shadow Edition 140’s got cruise, sun protection glass and HK as standard plus cosmetic tweaks like tinted rear lights, orbit grey alloys etc.
The VED on them is bloody cheap considering the performance especially if you stick below the magic £40k barrier.
I had 3 "M-lites" (a manual M135i, then an auto M140i and latterly an auto M140i Shadow Edition) so lots of experience with them.
Insurance is a bit of a pain these days, even for me at 37 with 3 kids it was hard to find a year's cover for under £400 so definitely factor that in.
Servicing costs are very variable so it's a good idea to shop around, you can get a minor service for around £220 and a major one for about £450 so a touch less than the £720 for 3 years if you do enough miles to need 2 services in that time.
Choose AUCs carefully as a surprising number left the factory on runflats. FWIW the ride was ok on RFT with adaptive (my middle one arrived when there was a shortage of MPSS).
As a minimum in terms of extras you would want to have Pro Nav (as the smaller screen is naff), HK (still not that good but better than standard), driver comfort pack. Adaptive suspension is MUCH better but hard to find.
The sort of age of car the OP is looking at is just after when they started fitting the particulate filters, for me if looking for a "fun" car I'd consider trying to find one from slightly earlier in 2018 as they offer up a lot more noise.
Tyres - the MPSS are great, generally about £100-120 for fronts and £130-150 rear. The outside edges of the fronts wear out first, life of the rears is very usage-dependent.
The B58 engine is not the most characterful that BMW have ever produced but it is very impressive nonetheless. It's party piece is the ability to return frankly unbelievable fuel economy on a longer run, 350 mile motorway trip at circa 80mph where possible easily over 40mpg in the auto, even pressing on a bit more it's hard to get it under 36mpg on a motorway run. Unless misbehaving all the time average likely to be somewhere around 25-28mpg, more if you have a longer commute (and self control).

Hit the nail on the head, esp regarding all things cost & economy. I've ran mine for 50k miles over 4 years.Insurance is a bit of a pain these days, even for me at 37 with 3 kids it was hard to find a year's cover for under £400 so definitely factor that in.
I went Goodyear Assymetric 5's after MPSS, better in the wet and cold, much less road noise on motorway too.
B1 Birds suspension and quaife transformed the car, B12 bilstein suspension is very good and more cost effective alternative to birds purely off reviews of what people have said. But never seen a review of them back to back.
As said above , you may be able to get CarPlay retrofitted , plenty of people on the M140 FB groups who offer it , generally around £100.
Mine didn’t have a WiFi antenna so bought one off eBay and fitted myself - CarPlay works fine and a good upgrade.
Multitude of FB Groups with a lot of knowledge from owners.
Had mine a month, cheap price to run , fuel isn’t bad , makes you smile,
