My shed of a Mondeo is being picked up by the scrappers this week, and I need a family car to replace it. I'm pretty much set on an SMax - the 7 seats would be really handy (I have three children) and they regularly have friends over / visiting grandparents so a 7 seater is necessary. I like the SMax as it's based on the Mondeo which is decent to drive and with the seats down it's absolutely cavernous inside to. We recently spend a weekend away, two adults and there children plus all our stuff in a Skoda Superb saloon and it really was a squeeze getting everything else in.

There aren't a massive number of them available, but it seems that there's an absolutely massive range in price. A new shape 66 plate on in decent spec is looking at being between 16-18k (some are more), but some old shape ones from 2014 are plentifully available for less than £10k which is a huge difference for a car that's 2 y older. I'd expect such a difference if we're talking 1y vs 3y old, but not at 5y vs 7,

We also want an auto, and it seems this adds about £2-3k to the price of a used model in the new shape.

It's very odd - am I missing something or is it just a lack of available models that's driving the rpice up and nobody wanting the older looking one (which admittedly is looking very dated inside)

Obviously the used car market is nuts across the board at the moment, but the People Carrier sector might well be further inflated by people doing exactly the same as you....Both my brother and boss at work have done exactly as you are wishing to do, for almost identical reasons - fitting in gear for their UK holiday, for which their current cars are too small.

Furthermore, I have noticed that our local "Hermes" bloke also now used a Ford Galaxy instead of a van, most likely because the cost of small vans has gone insane (due to Covid / deliveries) and these are the next best thing? I expect that might be quite a common thing around the country too....?

The MPV market went bonkers about 6 months ago. I’ve been casually keeping an eye on it, specifically for an SMax but am in no particular hurry.
Prices of used SMax have gone up by about 25% and the availability has gone down massively. Good examples go very quickly. Supply and demand I suppose.

I’ll be sitting tight for a whilst I think.

Thanks, it's clear it's not just me. Interesting poitn about using MPVs as Amazon deliveries - they really are extremely versatile.

Unfortunately time is not on my side. The kids start back at school in a week soon and the SKoda will be used by Lady Ace to commute (I'm WFH).

Guess I just need to brace myself..

Or move away from the SMax idea? Are they not just a Galaxy with a slightly sloped rear roof line? Reason being, if you can live with a Galaxy, then you've also then got options in the VW and Seat equivalents to look at? Roughly the same engine and gearbox choices too?

SMax's have always commanded a premium over most MPV's so when there's not many on the used front the premium gets bigger, I'd go for the overlooked Galaxy, admittedly it doesn't look as good but it ticks your boxes.

If buying a SMax or Galaxy DON'T buy one with a powershift gearbox

Big price jump is probably the model change. When engines went euro 6 compliant. I'd not want a euro 5 these days, future proofing really. A lot of new ones are minicabs and ubers too, mileage correction a feature. Get a high spec one and they tend to be privateers, so less chance of shonk...

How do you spot a non-powershift box? Did they go back to traditional auto boxes in a certain model year or do you need to look for a certain number of gears?

Pretty much all Ford autos from 2008 are Powershift, except, I think, the 2.2tdci which are traditional torque converter.

Never had any issues with ours. A 2011 2.0 Ecoboost 240bhp S-Max with Powershift 'box bought with 9K miles on the clock and sold at 84K. What's the issue with them as I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

One possible suggestion if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of space is the BMW 2 Series Grand Tourer.

I had a 62 Plate S-Max and then went to the BMW.

Both were 2ltr diesels and autos.

The BMW has slightly challenging looks, but given BMWs recent output it doesn't look that bad now - it's a bit smaller than the S-Max but beat it in every other area - engine was better (220d is around 190hp), gearbox is way better (as noted above powershift is not particularly great), and the tech is much better too.

I got rid of mine fairly recently and the trade in value was ste, admittedly before prices went crazy, but they do seem to have been a bit over looked.

I would also consider a Toyota Prius+. Basically a 7 seat version of the Prius. As spacious as an SMax (if not more so), and loads about because they are a popular choice for minicab drivers. And very, very reliable.

You got lucky.

It's a chocolate gearbox and utter ste. Addie Lee used to run them and they change the oil and filter in them every 12,500 miles (instead of 37,500, and they still broke.

You may get lucky and have no problems... but is it a risk you want to take.....

Mine (82k on mine) & lot's of Fords I've sourced for clients aren't having any issues, they're no less reliable than VAG DSG's they do (like all Dual Clutch Gearboxes) need to be serviced on schedule.

So don't be alarmed but make sure the one your looking at has been done if it's due.
