Has anyone else been experiencing rear main seal failures on their 2004 Boxster S? We just had our second failure in 17,000 miles. First was a slight leak after 6 months, the last one was a catastrophic failure, fortunately while the car was not running. All that oil makes a BIG puddle - had to have the site HazMat guys clean it up. If it happens again, I think I'm going to stump for a new engine.
Sorry to hear about your trouble. There have been hundreds of posts on this topic and from what I recall catastrophic failures are rare. I eventually sold my car after the RMS went the second time. Make sure Porsche don't charge you for the repair!

We have more news from the dealer. Looks like the intermediate shaft has failed. So now we are getting a new engine. Car will be layed up a couple of weeks as Maplewood gets the approval and a unit is shipped from Germany. Oh the agony of another break-in period...
That replaement engine will be a recon, that has already been on the tes bed
wouldn't worry too much about the running in - if its gonna go, it'll go anyway

We picked up the car Monday. According to the service manager this is a brand new engine - not a recon, so we can look forward to 2000 miles of sub 4200 rpm driving. On the other hand, the dealership did a nice job detailing the car.

I have a '98 Boxster that has developed an oil leak (oil droplets on the garage floor). It is from the engine bay, but I have not investigated further. It's been there for a couple of weeks and is not a massive leakage. Are there any characteristics of RMS failure, and could this be it?
Could be. My leak was just ahead of the rear wheels in the center of the car.
