My Wife is talking about getting an EV but much prefers a larger car/SUV.
Is the i-Pace the closest to an SUV?

The i-pace is smaller than you might think, but is excellent on packaging.

The Model S is actually quite large and only slightly smaller than a Merc S-class, so thats worth considering. Its a hatch too, so positively practical. I really dislike the Model X, as its too compromised for an SUV, but its large and plenty of space if that is what you are looking for.

But it really depends on what you are looking for. I keep remembering Harry Metcalfe's review of the BMW X45e - he really liked it and does the SUV thing well, drives well and as a PHEV it does everything that you might need. He did test it and it got 30+ miles pure EV, so if it fits, it might be a good SUV fit.

Thanks for these details.
She's talking pure EV only.
I have an i3S which she likes but wants bigger and more SUV.

Skoda Enyaq? VW ID4? Audi e-Tron? Merc EQ-C? BMW iX3?

Very please with our EQC, definitely a decent sized SUV, wife prefers it to her previous Macan. Apparently there is an EQA too, which I guess is smaller

From what I have seen, the ID4 is ok just not great. But whats the Audi equivalent? e-Q4? That is supposed to be better.

I have an iPace - but am not entirely sure what an SUV is. The boundaries seem very blurred.

I am looking to see what could replace my ipace but nothing seems to exist with a bigger boot - the bmw iX has a smaller boot, bizarrely, as it’s enormous. I am not sure there is anything that is properly SUV that is full BEV

I wouldn’t call a Tesla model X an SUV but it’s certainly large - but not available new until late 2022 and £99k please! Used ones are currently rather overpriced due to lack of new supply

If you don't want "sporty" I think it's quite hard to look past the Enyaq unless the badge puts you/her off.

Is the Ioniq 5 considered an SUV?

Although it looks like a medium sized hatchback on photos, it's massive:

Same dilemma as you.

Have looked at the enyaq and ioniq in the flesh (e-Niro on weekend). Depends what you need. Ioniq is big but if carrying a dog useless as boot has a heavy rake due to screen. But otherwise looks enormous inside.

Enyaq at the moment is my favourite. Only downside is lack of ooomph but maybe that's because I'm coming from a diesel cayenne with lots of torque. But we have a dog so think enyaq wins at the moment.

I will admit that I am confused as to VAG's strategy around EV's and what is available in the US (where I am). The ID3 isnt available here and you can only get the 2WD ID4 with up to 204BHP I think. But isnt there a 300BHP 4WD version? Is that the drivetrain that will get fitted to the Skoda & Audi? Should be pretty quick, but again, I am confused as to what the hell VAG is doing!

Might be in the new enyaq sportline or vrs that's to be announced - no idea and haven't followed as I've decided not to dump too much money into cars (takes coat and prepares to leave PH)

The wife has an xc90 at the moment and are replacing it with EV (company car reasons etc) She likes SUV’s so after looking around what’s available at the moment we have gone with an Audi Q4 Etron 50 (Quattro, good range and 299 bhp). Plenty of internal space and a reasonable (520L boot). Merc eqc boot is quite small and not keen on the bmw ix3 look. Skoda and vw have same platform but we prefer the Audi design and more power option. Xc40 is too small for us.

I don’t think bigger ev’s are available at the moment. Maybe in the future but not yet.

Since BMW still lack a proper EV platform, I'd imagine we'll see an electrified version of the X5 at some point.

Is the iX not based on a new EV platform?

It's CLAR based isn't it? Same platform as their longitudinal front-engined ICE vehicles.

You can get a quicker version of the ID4 called the GTX, 299hp

Or you can get the Q4 etron in the 50 variant which has 295hp. The boot on the Q4 is reportedly the same size as is found on an audi q5.

BMW do the IX3. Not sure how big they are, are they not similar to a Q5 in size?

I don’t know. I thought it was new but looking at some articles it seems you are correct.
