So I need to think about replacing these. Alex Wheatley drove mine and suggested a new clutch and normal flywheel (rather than lightened) would make it a better drive. My red rose has the racier diff and gear box which may be a bit ‘nicer’ with a normal fly wheel.
So - which clutches are people fitting? Standard AP one or the Power offerings?
Anyone know if standard fly wheels are available?

Nothing wrong with the light flyweel and CR box combo.. In fact it is bloody brilliant..

I think Powers ones are AP, I seem to recall they are calling them Gen 3 or something. I'm guessing some tweaks have been made.

Thanks. I always found mine hard work in traffic. The clutch would get too hot I think.

On my 4.2 I fitted the standard AP affair from TVR Parts last year. (Following an aborted clutch refurb debacle)
It has a standard flywheel and a Raceproved slave.

All seems to work well, with a decent pedal feel.

I did wonder about the Powers one but in true Cerbera fashion I was haemorrhaging money on parts from a simple engine out job, I took the position that my humble 4.2 didn’t need anything too fancy.

I don't have any issues with mine, even in traffic. I love it, in case you hadn't guessed. I don't think there is a big difference in traffic compared to a std flywheel, it will mainly be the longer 1st.

Best of luck whatever you fit. frown Central TVR had to do mine 3 times in 2019. I had to have the flywheel skimmed due to heat damage and the Raceproved slave had only lasted about 5 yrs and under 10k miles. The amount of heat in there and the concentric slave cylinder makes it an expensive weak point on the Cerbera IMHO.

The recently developed clutch alternatives didn't work. AP items weren't available at the time, and a refurbished one slipped when fitted. They fitted a Helix one in the end (which they hadn't really wanted to use) but it worked. It was driving fine when I sold the car anyway!

I had one of the first helix clutches fitted, had no fitment issues and would say it drives just the same as the AP unit I took out. There was nothing wrong with my AP clutch but as I had the gearbox out for the slave I replaced it.

Mines a Helix, I found it lighter, but that may have been the older clutch on the way out, the fingers broke on that one.

Ok I’ll maybe stick with the lightened flywheel but replace the clutch. Either an AP or a Gen 3 (?) one from Powers Performance.

Remember that there is a clutch rebuild / upgrade service from CG motorsport in Leeds. Mine is going great, and I think some others on this forum have also used them.

Yeah that’s cheaper but introduces potential for issues. My car is in Leeds but I think I’d rather a new clutch.

They build to ‘as good as new’ and there is a choice of friction materials. There was a spell where AP clutch wasn’t available and Helix clutch was over the correct width, so a rebuilt clutch was even more attractive. However I think these issues have been overcome?

Yeah I had one of those over width helix. My Indy at the time didn't recognise the issue so skimmed my flywheel when the clutch didn't release, thinking it was something different with the early car. Just means I have a lightened flywheel and more clutch life...biggrin (and need to change the flywheel at a later stage)

Did Alex say why he thought a heavier flywheel might make it drive better ? The first step to finding a solution is understanding the problem.

Yep I have one of those with Kevlar friction material, had it ages and works very well indeed.

I had a RP lightened flywheel and it lasted less than a year it overheated and warped a little which meant the clutch would drag on a gear change. I fitted a whole new AP clutch as I thought that was the problem only to find the same problem after assembly. Had to strip and inspect the whole flywheel and clutch assembly which pinpointed the warped flywheel. I had the standard one carefully checked balanced with the clutch assembly and not had a problem for about 5years. I think if the flywheel is over lightened then the low speed part throttle driving may be effected but I’m sure a well mapped car may get over this.mine definitely drove better at low speeds with minimal throttle openings.
