Morning all
Had my nephew messaging me all morning about upgrading his pc and i don’t have a clue what he needs really.

I have got him to send me his system details and these links are what he has found. Will it work or will he need different options ?

First thing I'd suggest is to find out what the memory (RAM) the existing PC can be upgraded to.

Try the the system scan here: https://uk.crucial.com/

As it stands swapping 8GB RAM for 8GB of faster RAM is not really worth it. Upgrade to 16GB or 32GB if the motherboard can take it.

For the SSD, for not much more money they could get 500GB or 1TB - 250GB is not much really.

Crucial (and other suppliers) will provide software to help transfer the current hard disk to the new SSD

Can't comment on the monitor or graphics card as I'm not a gamer - others will be along.

Unclear what problem we’re trying to solve here.

What is the machine used for.
What is the current limitation/issue

Depends on what games he wants to play, I suspect if it is anything recent he is going to be disappointed. That processor is very old and the graphics card you have linked to is hardly state of the art.

Unfortunately I think the reality is if he wants to play the latest games then really he needs a whole new PC and you are looking at £1500 to £2K

Cheers guys

I asked what games and he said Fortnite, GTA and just games on Steam. I don't think its anything to high end by the sounds of it.

Will send him the link to check what Ram he can have and report back.

It’s a 10 year old CPU, it’s not worth “investing” in upgrades for it unless he just needs some additional storage. Things have moved on a lot since then.

I know but IIRC he only got it last Christmas from his mom and dad

He has said it is running slow so I think a memory and SSD upgrade may help that slightly but as you said a 10yr old CPU will only do so much

Ram is going to make negligible difference, if he doesn't already have an SSD this will make a large difference but somebody would need to install windows on this new drive.

None of this is going to make any difference to playing games however, as has been said this processor is over ten years old now. Ultimately it all depends on what games he wants to play and what resolution he wants to play them at.

Would be looking at secondhand z170 or z270 motherboard machines over upgrading that PC and CPU.

Can get some decent CPUs for those boards (i7 6700k and 7700k) as well as the RAM for as much as upgrading the current PC. 2nd gen i5 is at the end of usefulness now for modern games and the motherboards will become a limiting factor for upgrades presently.

Save up for a decent machine is my take.
