Dental Hygenist

Odd question, maybe?
I have just seen a dental Hygenist for the first time ever. A pleasant experience but just felt like a waste of money and time. It was initially recommended by my dentist.....
Certainly got rid of a lot of plaque behind my front teeth, but I have managed without one for almost 50 years. She commented that my gum health was remarkably good.
She has recommended that I visit twice a year...this feels a little overkill seeing as I have managed so far....
Opinions on dental hygienists? It feels like a 'nice to have' rather than a necessity.

... ok if you have the spare income but I don't think its necessary ....If you smoke , drink red wine or coffee then a hygenist is worth it once a year to clear all that clag (technical term !)
Twice a year seems like overkill but I see it in all industries. As an example , the dog wormer I give to my dog once a year, always been recommended once a year is now suddenly needed every 3 months. Strange as the ingredients is exactly the same !!

... I had a cute hygienist (who as above was largely repeating what the dentist did during his checkup)... New dentist bought the surgery and has finally managed to bin her off after what appeared to me to be a fair few years of trying (she was very popular for some reason!) and does the same job - minus the 'task overlap', but charges me the same as for both previously! I've found to my cost that I've seen a Dentist as an NHS patient (should I admit that on Pistonheads?) They then recommend a hygienist appointment which turns out to not be on the NHS and they give me a big bill for it after.

Before private dentistry became mainstream your nhs dentist would inspect and clean your teeth every 12 months free of charge.
Then they brought in charges for every service and split the cleaning from the inspection and charge for each individually but expect you to have both every 6 months

I stopped going NHS in 2015. A scale and polish are included if you’re a NHS patient. Though they’re not going to offer this up are they.
Our current dentist never did it - a quick (and I mean quick) prod and that was it. It was made clear if you wanting them cleaning you booked a hygienist appt. 20 mins for £40.She's private only now so we got bounced into Denplan - £50/mth for wife & I. I go to the hygienist every 3 months as tartar builds up on my teeth no matter what I do (mother was same). Wife goes twice a year.

When you say "Denplan rates" you do realise your dentist sets those, don't you? They could include anything they liked, it'd just vary the cost. There's an element of 'just in case' cost in there too, for fillings etc. All Denplan does is collect the money.If you didn't have anything other than a checkups and hygienist visits it should be quite a bit cheaper to PAYG.
