No PAS - whats it like?

Been offered a Chim with no PAS - I have driven one with power steering but never one without.

Can anyone let me know what they are like without power steering? Should I avoid non PAS Chims?

My 400 has no PAS and to be honest, it doesn't bother me. I spend very little time driving at the sort of speeds that make PAS a difference anyway.

If you were going to spend a lot of time parking or driving about in town then I guess PAS would be beneficial. But for the Chimaeras natural habitat, the fast open road, she doesn't need it.

Yep mine doesnt have PAS either.. i quite like it that way.. Steering feels very connected.. Parking is rather heavy but your arms can grow

Whats the one your looking at like? is it a 400? what sort of mileage?

Mine doesn't have it either. All the other cars in the house have PAS and the fact that the Chim hasn't, isn't really that noticeable to me. A car with PAS might be easier to sell on. But when your enjoying it, it's one less thing to go wrong.

Mine doesn't, it can be a bit heavy when trying to park in smaller spaces but otherwise it's not noticeable

As i understood it the factory added power steering to chimaeras as an option just incase the odd ladyboy wanted to have a test drive.

I have 94 4.0 Chim without PAS. Front tyres are 205. Lack of PAS really not a problem IMO, even for parking. Definitely don't let it put you off if the car is good otherwise

It can be a pain if you have to regularly parallel park in a tight spot outside your house (ala me) but other than that I don't really miss PAS.

Being a bit of a luddite I only realised the other day that some TVR's have PAS and I was like...."Whaaaaaaaat!".

I've driven a few chim's and i prefer a car without pas, it's easier to correct if you get the tail end out!I found that with pas, you over compensate and get in worse state sometimes. But i must agree , it is heavy when parking, but you get used to it!!

If you want forearms like Popeye (or to look like you've been watching too much Cindy Crawford Workout Video), avoid PAS.

For the rest of you, PAS is great at low speed, e.g. anywhere in London, parking etc. The non-PAS one I tried felt heavy at most speeds and I lacked confidence that I'd be able to provide some opposite lock quickly enough, in the event of an emergency.

TVR's PAS is pretty good and definitely adds to the car. Plus its worth marinally more when you come to sell it. Hopefully.

Mine does not have PAS and the only previous owner was a slightly built female who said she had driven other TVRs and would never have PAS.
I am male and far from slighhtly built, the day car steering is very power assisted and the lack of it on the Chim has never worried me.

Agree with all that has been said I test drove both with and without and preffered without.

I would say find the right car for you in both conditon and service history and don't worry whether it's got pas or not. I don't even think about it I'm too busy listening to the growl out of the tail pipes

Mine has PAS but I wish it didn't. Sure it makes parking easier but at the expense of sometimes feeling vague when pressing on.
It also makes embarrasing groaning noises at full lock, needs frequent topping up and adds to the servicing costs.
I woundn't pay a penny extra for PAS. In fact next time I might try a 'blighted by the girly option' tack in negotiations.

Im selling my Chim at the moment and you would'nt beleive the ammount of people who phone up and only want one with PAS. It seems they would rather buy a bag of nails with PAS than a genuine good car without. I now have a cerb with PAS which is great when it comes to parking but compared to my chim it has far less responce through the wheel. Given the choice I couldnt decide weather or not to have it. If it was an everyday car then I would prefer the PAS but as I only use it for fun then I prefer the feedback you get with manual steering.

Its fine, i prefer having full feedback from the steering on a car like this anyway. Like the others say - parrallel parking is when its heavy... but hell, after blasting around in the car, yer adrenalin is high enough to cope with the extra force needed to park.

A have an early 4.3 chim without PAS and 17ins wheels, yes the steering is a little heavy whilst parking, but not enough to warrant converting it to PAS... anyway think of the weight saving advantages of the non PAS cars!

Non PAS Griff. It is a bit harder at speeds less than 10mph but not noticable above that. Company hack has PAS. Had a Tuscan for 7 weeks with PAS and hated it. Made the car far too light.
Something else to go wrong in my opinion.

If I were selling my non-PAS Chim I'd be sure to point folk towards this thread just for that post! ;D

I just don't get why PAS is seen as such an essential when it can only benefit at parking speed and at best not feel any worse at any decent speed. The only possible justification is that it might be easier to catch a wayward rear - but thats small consolation if the rear only went in the first place because of loss of steering feel.
