Hi all

Just a quick question. Is a serpentine or pre serp engine better? Or is it simply a question of personal taste? Is there a quick way of telling which is which just by looking at a 500 engine (belts etc)?

Also am i right thinking that you can tell the later borg warner box by the orientation of reverse gear e.g. bottom right hand corner?

Many thanks,

ARC

To my knowledge a serp. engine is indeed better, although I don't really know why. I think cooling is better for one (at least my current 500 is a lot cooler than my old 4.3). On the other hand, there are some pretty great pre-serp. cars out there.

BW box is indeed with the reverse bottom right hand.

...but see this thread, too:

I wouldn't make a decision based purely on a serp engine/T5 gearbox - general concensus seems to be that the advantage isn't clear-cut, so take account of the overall condition/mileage/service history of the car.

I must admit, I preferred the change on the Rover box, which was one of the reasons I selected my car.
