Looking for a reliable car for 3-4 months - 50 mile commute on motorway 5 days a week. Not bought at this price range for 15 years so any advice appreciated - tempted to have some fun for a few months

Old school Civic or Corolla. Certainly something Japanese and petrol.

I did the very same thing last year....Honda Accord estate was my shed of choice, it was doing a fine job until someone coming the other way came around a corner on my side of the road & wrote it off!

At this price point it is really just pot luck. Do a search on autotrader for cars <=£1k and see what is available. Anything petrol, NA with a long MOT and ideally Japanese would be a good start.

A Focus Mk1 1.6 would also be a decent shout.

French stuff like Clio 1.2's seems to keep going.

Diesel wise you could get lucky with anything 1.9PD (Passat) and also the Ford/PSA 2.0HDI in a 307 or even older in a 406 might do the job. There was also an old skool Civic diesel 1.7 IIRC.

Head over to the shed thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Posts by bearman are really informative - he runs a fleet of rental sheds for his business so he’s got good experience of what’s good and what isn’t.

Mark 1 Yaris seems to be a consistent recommendation.

I struck lucky with a low mileage 1.6 petrol 307. It’s going to need new brakes and I’ll give the rear suspension a refresh as well, but otherwise - touch wood! - it’s done the job and I’d have no issues doing that sort of commute in it.

As well as Autotrader look on Gumtree, cheap cars are often found on there rather than Autotrader as it is free to advertise.

Toyota Yaris 1.3 Mk 1 every time. Reliable, cheap to run, surprisingly good to drive and reasonably comfortable. The 1.0 is OK but for your journey I'd go 1.3.

I think general rule is Petrol, NA and Japanese. As your only keeping for a short period of time check the MOT and just run it till it dies.

Gumtree, FB and Autotrader are your best bet. FB tends to have more cars, but I find the platform a bit strange and not easy to use.

I always take a look at the MOT history. If its regularly failed and the list of defects / advisories is long I would tend to avoid as these might not have been looked after.

MK2 Ford Focus 1.6

I got one in December 2019 after my lease went back with he full intention of leasing again. Cost me £500. It had a slight issue with the instrument panel requiring a bit of soldering but its still going strong and only cost so far have been service and MOT and new brakes all round.

Yes I’ve been surprised in my brief search on mk1 and mk2 1.6 focus prices . Will stick to petrol probably on those .

For that commute I'd look at the Vectra you'll get a nice one for your money & they're no less reliable than a Ford or any of the Japanese offerings.

The pick is the 1.8 SRI:

20-odd years ago I was running "sheds" for work, doing 30k+ miles a year. I needed 5 doors and a big boot.

I used to buy a car privately with a long MOT and good tyres, and sell it when it had a couple of months MOT left.
I had 3 Granadas (Mk3 and Mk4) and a couple of Carltons. Big cars, designed for high mileages. Never had a problem, apart from a broken clutch cable.

What's the "modern" equivalent, now that Ford and Vauxhall don't make big, simple, petrol-engined cars? Presumably a Honda Accord or Toyota Avensis.

Even a mondeo I would say

Whatever you can find in reasonable condition!

Japanese petrol as mentioned, Mk1 Focus, MK4 Golf or something else with the old VW PD diesel... the cars that still seem numerous despite their age!

Was thinking about these. Loads pop up on FB and all for pretty cheap.

Dead simple at this price point. Buy privately and from the person is least likely to fk you over. Forget about make/model/spec.

We just picked up an immaculate Clio 58plate In dynamique spec, so has air con, elec windows, alloys and added bonus of panoramic sunroof for £1k, it was up for £1200:
Has 12mths MOT, 90k miles on clock, new cambelt and new clutch and full dealership history!
All the precious MOT history showed no fails either, so know it had been looked after.
An absolute steal and only 1 lady owner:
Hopefully our daughter will have many years driving her little car and can then hand over to our other daughter in 3years.
We know the usual Renault faults and have a fabulous little garage near us too.
This was on gumtree by a private seller, some bargains to be had out there.
