Best used iPhone 2021
Discussion
I guess there have been similar threads, but what's the answer right now?
My trusty old 6 has started complaining I'm too cheap and the app versions are no longer supported.
Not fussed about budget, but I've not been interested in splurging on the latest and greatest model since my early 20s.
Just want something that will work well for the next few years. Where's the value sweet spot?

k, I sound old.Probably an iPhone SE at £399 new for the 64GB model (which has similar specs to the iPhone 11, but with TouchID instead of FaceID, and a smaller screen).
If you want something larger/fancier/bigger capacity, then a new/refurbed iPhone XR/11 is probably your best option, but will obviously be more expensive (iPhone XR 64GB £499/£419 or iPhone 11 £599/£499 new/refurbed respectively).
The SE and the 11 will give you the longest time for supported OS updates though (other than an iPhone 12 or upcoming 13).
If you can wait a couple of weeks, then see what the launch of the iPhone 13 does to new/refurb prices of the older phones...although the supply chain & chip shortages may not enable much of a discount.
Here's a feature comparison from the Apple site to help.

iPhones seem to really hold their value and the batteries seem to start to die after 18 months or so. I don't really understand why the phones are so expensive and the batteries are so poor as my nearly 3 year old £200 Honor battery seems as good as the day I first bought it.For that reason it is probably easier to just buy new rather than have all the hassle of trying to get a new battery fitted. My daughter is due a new phone which obviously has to be Apple and I am waiting until the 13 comes out to see if the price of the new 12 falls.
The 12 is currently £679 at Currys, doesn't seem worth getting the 11 to save £80 and have a worse screen.
Fundamentally it's a choice between sticking to the home button / touchID form factor that you're used to (buy the latest SE) or moving to the new notch / FaceID format.
IMO the new style phones are a much better experience, and I never hear of anyone wanting to go back to the home button once they're used to it (except for touchid superiority when wearing a mask!). I have a nearly 3 year old iPhone XR that is still working great and should be supported for quite a few more years yet. Get an 11 or 12 and it'll do you fine for a long time.

They charge that price to keep the riff-raff out!For that reason it is probably easier to just buy new rather than have all the hassle of trying to get a new battery fitted. Maybe for the numpties who buy the phone & contract all-on-one never notice the total price or battery loss after 2 years as they're constantly swapping them out?
...and my 3.5 year old iPhone 8 has no battery problems - although I did get a cheap battery replacement for my iPhone 6 before I traded it in for the iPhone 8!
I'm a Mac/Apple fan, but I've never understood why some people buy a Mac laptop that's more expensive but underpowered compared to a decent Windows laptop. But then I don't understand people who will almost bankrupt themselves to lease the latest cars.

If you can wait www.mobiles.co.uk (Carphone warehouse so not some iffy operation) usually do fantastic Black Friday deals. My trusty old 6 has started complaining I'm too cheap and the app versions are no longer supported.

k, I sound old.I got a 12 last year for about £4 a month over the cash price of the phone / contract length.
Tesco were advertising 0% on new contract iPhones today Personally I would not bother with second hand.
I picked up an IPhone X recently. Think it was about £250 from Amazon refurbished.
I’m very pleased with it. It arrived in great condition, OLED screen, decent size phone too bit smaller than 11/12.
I’d say the only down side is battery. I’m not a super heavy phone user, I’d say average, so it’s fine. I believe it’s had an after market battery which lasts me all day, but if I were to use it a lot I’d need to give it a boost.

I've been using an X for the past 3 years and it's been fine, had a go on a iPhone 12 and the screen was nowhere near as bright.I’m very pleased with it. It arrived in great condition, OLED screen, decent size phone too bit smaller than 11/12.

Only thing is the battery capacity has dropped to 80% so I have to keep it on charge or connected to a power bank or it won't last a whole day.

I have just bought a "very good condition" used Pixel 4XL from this eBay shop and am very pleased with it. The link above is for a iPhone X but only 64gb for £237. I've no idea if that's a good price or not.

Don't know if it's just me...or a combination of me and crappy quality photos, but does the case look damaged/distorted in this photo?I have just bought a "very good condition" used Pixel 4XL from this eBay shop and am very pleased with it.
