I want to keep the car indefinitely, and the rust is my main concern (I have an MX5...). Have any of you treated the chassis with Wurth underbody protection wax or similar products? I can't find independent opinions and I'm hesitatant if to go for wax or something "serious" like Valvoline Tectyl Bodysafe?

TIA,
Michal

People seem to be raving about Lanoguard so that may be worth researching.

Bilt Hamber products are also worth looking at, I rate their stuff really highly.

Suggest you have a look on the official GR Yaris Forum. Quite a few have used Dinitrol and posted pictures and comments of the process.

Apparently, there is little to no Underbody protection from factory and some already showing slight surface corrosion so definitely worth doing by the looks of it.

Bilt Hamber, Dinitrol and Rustbuster have some excellent products, finding someone to apply them properly is usually more of a problem.

Landcruiser owners seem to favour Krown (Wolverhampton) which is a clear coat so you can keep an eye on what's going on underneath, which isn't possible with thick black coatings, 2 year treatment when they suggest a check over and top up if needed...i haven't used them myself.

Some others use chain lube for DIY protection, i personally now give an underbody spray of ACF50 twice a year, takes about 20 minutes, a 4 litre bottle of which will probably last a couple of years for a small vehicle at a cost of around £80.

Best anti rust measure though is to try and keep the underbody free of salt by hosing off every now and again during the winter months and then give a good wash down underneath April time when the salt has gone after a heavy rain drive...few days after that wash down i give the first ACF50 spray and just gave both motors another spray ready for the coming winter.

For cavities you'll struggle to beat Bilt Hamber's cavity wax giant aerosols, the probes and sprays are superb, blockages unheard of.

A relative of mine used to give his cars some underbody treatment, underseal/hammerite whatever in order to protect them from corrosion. Now I will grant you that he never bought new cars, only ones that had already seen a few years of action.

The one that I had dealings with getting it through its final few MOT's was a Nissan Micra, it was the most rotten thing I've seen in years and certainly compared to other similar age and newer Micra's, it was abysmal.

I put this down to the already present mild corrosion getting trapped underneath whatever he painted on top of it and just accelerating the rate in which it ate through the steel.

I am there right now with my land cruiser. Guess I'll find how good they are.

Be interesting to hear your views once you've had a chance to inspect.

Had a look just now while it was on the ramp. Looking good, for a 20+ year old vehicle it's in great nick, the krown seemed very thoroughly applied, into all the sills, chassis rails, doors, behind the lights, etc.

Time will tell how it holds up, but so far I am impressed.

Much obliged, having rustproofed our own vehicles its a really involved job, did you take it pre cleaned and prepared or did they steam clean and remove worst chassis rust spots etc.

Steam cleaned there. He said it didn't need any rust scrubbing which was surprising for such an old vehicle, but normally they would do that.

Excellent, indeed you do have a good one @ 20 years old that needed no rust removing before treatment,

Luckily i found a good one too, one look underneath was all i needed, had and have seen plenty of others that look really good up top but once you slide underneath its like you're under a different vehicle entirely.

Very much so, or the classic look underneath and all you can see is thick black underseal covering all the old rust.
