M140i vs 435d gran coupe
Discussion
Hi,
I know these two cars are incomparable as they are totally different. I just need some help choosing either a petrol or diesel as my next car.
I drive 30 miles (in total) on the motorway plus a little city driving every other day (sometimes consecutive days). Is getting the diesel car more sensible, or the petrol will be fine since the 30 miles motorway journey doesn't really matter?
TIA

If you are careful on the motorway it is possible to get 40+ mpg out of the 140. My best was 43 on the slog up to Scotland from Surrey. Do you need a big car or intend to take passengers a lot? There's not a huge amount of space in the 1 series which doesn't matter for us as it is mainly just 2 of us + dog, but it can get a bit cramped for passengers.I know these two cars are incomparable as they are totally different. Thanks for the input mate. I don't always take passengers only occasionally. Say I go for the 435d gc, based on my driving needs, am I saving money on fuel compared with the 140i? Or the saving can be ignored as it is minimal?
I would go petrol for those journeys, have you considered a 430i/435i Grand Coupe? Space would be a major factor, the m140i isn't that big if you're thinking about carrying any more than one passenger for any distance, so the GC would be better...both really nice cars, the M140i is probably more fun, the GC a little more 'grown up'

Is the rear seat space really that bad in m140i?435d:
1. Point and shoot performance
2. Traffic light grand prix
3. Fast corners in the wet (the type you cannot do with the M140i).
4. Torque everywhere
5. Decent fuel economy (even pushing hard above 40 mpg at times). It’s home on a motorway. Cruiser.
M140i
1. Prefer petrol sound over diesel
2. Not bothered about fuel economy
3. Enjoy revving out for power
4. Don’t really care about X drive or a year round car and prefer the rear wheel drive experience. Something lighter and not as nose heavy handling as the 435d.
5. Short journeys mostly, B roads and, the odd motorway.
As someone said on here. Pick the car you like. Drive both if you have not and then choose.
Both are great engines. Motorways mainly I would edge toward the derv. It’s more relaxing to drive in that respect. Barely ticking over 1000 rpm in comfort mode on a motorway.

Currently driving a 430D GC. Boot space is handy, probably 100L extra over the 1 series but the diesel noise is hard to get used to after a petrol.
I bought it as I just couldn’t find a 3.0 Petrol engine within my budget for the GC but after a few months, I’m looking at other Petrol cars.
I have owned several BMWs in the past but this is the first car I have just not gelled with and I can’t put my finger on why. We had a Cooper S before it and whilst not as fast as the BMW, it was far more exciting to drive.

Is the rear seat space really that bad in m140i?Had a 430d and 330e as company cars. Now have a M140 and for me it’s the best by a mile, although I did enjoy the 430 for motorway journeys. The 140 has enough room as I don’t often take passengers and it’s only cramped in the back for tall people. The hatchback is useful and for the performance the fuel economy is fantastic. I average around 32mpg but can get 40ish on longer trips.
I've had both! Well and m140i and a 335d (also a 420i GC). The best combination here would be a 440i GC. Absolutely great car. I found the fuel consumption in the 335d very poor. Over 23000 miles my average was 35mpg compared to 42 out of a 330d (non X drive). M140i got 29mpg over 9000 miles. Both your options are good to be honest but very different cars. The m140i is a lot more fun. Interior space is fine. I had a mk7 golf R before and to be honest there is very little difference in space.
Spec is the most important thing with these cars. Pro nav is a must on the m140i. Standard sound system is awful on both if that bothers you.
