Its not so much about the the acting, locations, set design or production values that sucked me in but the era's and the periods and the historical figures they meet. Made me look back on things I was aware off but not properly look at them before . Sometimes I am pausing the episode to look up the historical facts and people they meet. Some of these things were not taught at a UK school and it is very interesting to learn learn about Americans and other history.

I seem to remember watching series (1?) on terrestrial TV a couple of years ago, after which it just disappeared. Would have liked to have seen it wrapped up rather than just "vanish".

It was on E4.

They did 2 series and finished with a feature-length two-parter which wrapped it up.

I really can't recall how many series I watched. I can remember the last Scene, but don't want to post any spoilers.
I know that I never saw the feature length two parter though. Thank you, I'll try and find it!
