EVs and Vloggers
Discussion
Interesting to see two thoughtful video blogs from Harry and JayEmm on the topic of EVs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVFJUxeGFAE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXDhIz2ge5M
What both videos essentially are saying is that EVs are not an environmental solution in themselves, and indeed cause many environmental deficits in production, as well as where the electricity they use is generated from. JayEmm also makes the excellent point about the relative impact of cars globally on CO2 versus other outputs, and shows how small the footprint from cars actually is. He then makes the excellent point about using carbon offsetting rather than banning fossil fuel cars being as more effective.
You then have the issues some YouTube reviews allude to (e.g. Petrol Ped recently on a drive to Wales in an EV and Stef ABtv on a recent Audi EV he was testing), that the recharging network in this country is just not up to standard, and will not be for years. You then have the recharge times (if you can find a charging point) at one end of a long journey to make the return haul.
Are people really aware of these real world issues, and do they care? The answer is probably not, and if you just do local commuting etc an EV will probably work. But there are real questions about the real benefits of EVs over fossil fuel cars, and the way we are legislatively and from a marketing/conditioning perspective we are being pushed towards them.
But one thing I find quite distasteful is that many YouTube vloggers are now getting the hots for EVs, and as car companies need to push sales of these, they are pushing them onto reviewers, probably for some financial compensation in many cases, and these reviewers are only too keen to oblige, as they rely on the car companies for their content and business model. I know these guys have to make money, and the old days of media publishing are now going in terms of online content, but the lack of editorial independence in this case does worry me, as these vloggers are giving their followers a false impression about the benefit and current relevance of EVs.
Unfortunately, I think the train has now left the station for the demise of the petrol car and clumsy Govt and EU rules are now set in stone for what is going to happen, but it is still good to have your eyes open to what is really going on here.
