997.1 Carrera 2
Discussion
I have a 997.1 C2 which I have had for a year.
I would look for a 2006 or later car as you're more likely to have the final IMS bearing revision which is allegedly more reliable. 2004/05 cars can be upgraded to a later IMS bearing type for peace of mind if you wish. Anecdotally you see fewer 3.6 with rebuilt engines for sale than 3.8s but the 3.8 was more popular overall so read into that what you will!
Obviously I am biased but think that 997.1 is great value at the moment, engine issues scare people off and there is a gulf in prices between gen 2 cars. Overall they are reliable but they are 13-17 years old now so consumables, bushes and suspension components may benefit from being renewed.
Classic Porsche things, check the front radiators for rot, check the exhaust, silencers/manifolds/fastenings for excessive corrosion (they'll all bit a bit corroded). But I would buy on condition, meet the owner if possible and aim for something that has been over serviced not under serviced. Frequent oil changes a good thing!

Only way to tell if it's been rectified is if it has a 5 digit bill for an engine rebuild including new Nikasil cylinder liners from the likes of Hartech.
Half joking on that one. Bore scoring is the big controversial engine issue with the 996.2 and 997.1. Some say it's rare and can be prevented while others will tell you it will affect them all eventually no matter what.
Whether you believe in the borescore bogeyman or not is really neither here nor there. A pre purchase inspection by a specialist is just a good idea in general on any Porsche being sold out of the OPC network with a limited warranty and with a 997.1 you'd be daft not to get a borescope as part of that PPI. Otherwise, they aren't any less reliable or more fragile than any other (c15yo) car but the cost to repair can be a shock compared to some other cars. Therefor a a few £££ on a PPI makes sense rather than buying then realising you need a few thousand to rectify some neglected maintenance.
