Hi all,
Having nearly finnished the car I have come across a majour problem, The enging I aquired is a 1996 therefore needing cat etc which is as I undrestand NOT the way to go. I have the offer of a recently reconditioned engine which has not been used but it is a 1985 engine, this would need emmssons testing during SVA and subsiquent MOT test's, I have been asured that the engine will have no problem passing. Basicly my question is - do many of you have engines fitted that are post 1975 therfore requiring the Emmissions test, if so do you have any problems and kind of BHP are you running.
I am in a bit of a delemer as to which way I should go and I am not sure if it is best to look for a engine built before 75.
Any advise is welcomed.

My mot tester told me that all he needed to see was clean emmisions with or without the cat. Some new cars don't really need the cat. So if the engines a clean engine you may not need a cat either. I'd leap at an lsx because it's got minimal crevice area around the top ring lands and a really good ecu.

Be careful here. I had a letter from AS stating that my engine block was a 1972 blah blah and the SVA tester would not except it as prove of age. What they require as proof is written conformation from the original engine manufacture, not just anybody like you engine builder. So what do they go by, well block casting number to date it. What that meant for me was that I had to pass 1980 emissions, why, because the casting number showed that the block could have been manufactured from something like 1967 to 1978, not sure exactly but the latter date fell past the cut off point and therefore put me at 1980 emissions.
The tester then spent ¾ of an hour tweaking my carbs to get it through! From an MOT standpoint I believe I will now just have a visual smoke check at idle.

I've been told that the VOSA guys and the DVLA have used www.mortec.com in the past to grade the age of an engine.
